Hello,
I am in search of any of my birth family. DOB 11-09-65,POSSIBLY BORN IN STPETERSBURG FL, ADOPTED THROUGH DEPT OF CHILDREN & FAMILIES. Also does anyone have knowledge about FLA LAWS IN 1965 REGARDING : rights of a PUTATIVE FATHER ? How would you find out if the biologicle father consented or even knew hew had a child to be born ? Would he have to be notified in some way by the agency ? Does the birthmother just have the right to give the child up soley ? Maybe the search guru will help. Thanks |

The laws regarding the father of the child sometimes depended on whether the birthmother and birthfather resided together or if the birthmother and birthfather were married or not. For 1965 laws you might contact the Florida Dept of Children and Families at 850-921-2177 to see if the birthfather's signature was required on the relinquishment documents for that time period. If you know the name of the adoption agency you should contact them first to request information from the adoption file in their office. You might also ask what other services they will provide you. To receive non-identifying information if the adoption was facilitated independently or through the State welfare department, contact: For adoption related information and records: Florida Department of Children and Families 1317 Winewood Boulevard, Building 7 Tallahassee, FL 32399-0700 (850) 921-2177 Fax: (850) 488-0751 Non-Identifying Information: Non-identifying information is available to adopted adults age 18 or older and adoptive parents. Identifying Information: Adopted adults age 18 or older or adoptive parents can receive information regarding the birth parents if the birth parents have given written consent to disclosure. Birth parents can receive information on adopted adults age 21 or older if the adopted adult or birth parents have given written consent to disclosure. Adoption Registry: Any of the following persons can consent to have information released: adopted adults, birth parents, adoptive parents, biological siblings, and biological grandparents. A court, upon petition of adopted adult for good cause shown, may either open the adoption records or hire an intermediary to locate and advise each birth parent of the registry (if not registered). Contact: Florida Adoption Reunion Registry Florida Dept of Children and Families 1317 Winewood Blvd Building 6, Suite 100 Tallahassee, FL 32399-0700 (850) 921-2177 Fax: (850) 488-0751 Original Birth Certificate: An adoptee must petition the court in which the adoption was finalized. therighttoknow@earthlink.net Other great websites to check out: http://www.adoptionchat.com http://www.adoption.com http://www.adopting.org http://www.adoptionregistry.com |

Hello,
Your info has been very helpful. I found out that in florida in 1965 that when a birthmother gives a child up for adoption she doesn't even have to notify the birthfather ! If they were not married he doesn't even have to know about it. How unfair. They didn't even allow the birthmother to add any additional information to the sealed adoption in case the adoptee searched one day. |
