Have BMom's Name & College - Search Strategy?
I believe I have my BMom's name (was placed over me in hospital nursey by MISTAKE - aparents kept this for me all these years in case I wanted to search.)
I am currently waiting for non-Id info from the state. (How long does this take, BTW ??) Should I wait for this before starting a search? Aparents belive I was NOT named at birth - I am referred to as "baby girl" on final adoption decree. Called the Lawyer who handeled the adoptioin - he is retired, has little memory of the adoption and directed me to the court. Also, I'm planning to ask my Dr. to request hospital birth records. I believe I know where Bmom went to college, but policy (and rightly so) is not to release alumni info w/u consent. Any search tips/stragegy will be most appreciated! |

I believe it was a small liberal arts college in south western VT. It's at least 4 hours from me - I've heard that yearbooks can be helpful. In my case, I'm not certain she completed her MA there.
Dod you find you bparents this way? |

If it were me, I'd take a ride out to the college and go to their library. They are bound to have past copies of the yearbooks and newspapers. There might be an entry referring to her where abouts at the time. It would be a place to start.

In our search for our sister, we looked through Classmates.com and found someone who had the same last name of her adoptive parents. It turned out to be her cousin who put us in touch with our sister within a week. Of course we knew what county she was adopted in and just starting looking through all of the schools in that county. Hope it helps!

If you check with the library at the college...since you have her name..they may be able to send you a copy of her photo from the college yearbook!! Hugs, Brenda

I hope this isn't true in your case, but when my son was born in 1969 I was using an alias chosen for me by the home for unwed mothers, and he was identified in the hospital with that name. (This was their policy, not my choice.) The alias used the first letter of our last name and we kept our first names, so the initials were identical. But it might be a mistake to assume that the name over your crib was your bmom's real name.

Mary Jane,
Thank you for your post! You may well be right about a false name - I had not thought of this. Small world - my Godmother was one of the RNs who attended my birth. From what she remembers, bmom was a full time grad student and not in a home for unwed mothers. I was the second child she relinquished. Bmom's first experience was via an agency - it was apparently a bad experience, and that's why she insisted on a private adoption the second time around. Nevertheless, I will remember your post when searching! |

Response from the Search Guru
Welcome to the Search and Reunion Message Board!
Check with your local library and also check with the library at the college and see if they have an "inter-library" loan program. It is possible that the college library will "loan" some yearbooks to your local library if the college has more than one copy. If not, you may be able to get a local genealogist in the college town (or even a student in the college) to make copies of the yearbook pages for the name you are researching.
