WELCOME TO THE SEARCH AND REUNION MESSAGE BOARD!

If you know what adoption agency handled your adoption contact them for information from your adoption file that will help you with your search. If you were a private adoption or do not know the name of the adoption agency contact this office:

INFORMATION THAT IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR STATE:

“Non-identifying information” for adoptees and adoptive parents is information from your adoption file about your birth parents. It generally includes ages, marital status, states of birth, education, religion, occupations and a physical description of your birth parents. It should also include the reason for relinquishment and may include information about your aunts, uncles and grandparents. It is called “non-identifying information” because it does not include any identifying information such as names, addresses or social security numbers. If you already have your non-identifying information but it is information given to your adoptive parents at the time of your adoption you should re-apply for the non-identifying information. Agencies are giving out much more comprehensive information now that they did in the past.

“Mutual Consent Registry” is a registry where adoptees and birth parents can register the adoption information. If both parties register normally the agency responsible for the registry will notify both parties that consent has been given to contact each other.

Some adoption agencies in Texas have recently started conducting searches to reunite adoptees and birth parents. Check with your adoption agency to see if they offer this service. Also, some adoptees have had good luck with petitioning the court to unseal their adoption records in the county where the final adoption took place. Check with this office in Texas in your county of adoption for more information.

UPDATE: Dallas county will open your records with a simple request to the juvenile courts and send you your OBC from Austin.

Do you know what all information they can change on an original birth certificate? Do the laws change from state to state? If so, I am concerned with Texas laws.

Thank you

Generally the adopted name replaces the birth name on the amended certificate and the adoptive parents names and address replace the birth parents names and address. In a few state the date of birth is changed and the place of birth. Some amended birth certificates leave the name and address of the hospital blank.

I have been wondering for a very long time whether or not I am adopted. Every once in a while I'll do a little research, but then stop. Well, I'm in an "am I?" mode right now. One of the things that has always bothered me is that my Texas birth certificate did not list the hospital or note the fact that my mother had other children (there are zeros in those blanks). After reading about amended birth certificates, I'm sitting here in tears. I never knew there was such a thing. I'm terrified to ask my father the truth, but scared not to as well.

When were you born? What city also? I know how you feel, at least from this end. I have searched for my sister on and off for years and it is very discouraging. I wonder why she never searched, but maybe she has and has ran into the same problems that I have. Best of luck. If you dont mind me asking, why do you feel you were adopted?

Welcome to the Search and Reunion Message Board!

You might contact this office and request "non-identifying information" and see if they have a file on you:

I was born Jan. 18, 1971 in Huntsville, Tx (at least that's what I've been told- like I said, no hospital is listed). I have serious suspicions that I'm adopted because of a couple of odd things that were said to me when I was younger, the fact that I have never fit into my family and have always been an "outcast", the oddness of my birth certificate, the fact that my mother had an absolute fit when I asked her if I was adopted (that was when I was about 5- one of my earliest memories). Also, a search of TX divorce records shows my parents other divorces to other people, but not to each other. One of the reasons the site lists for the absence of records is adoption. My father has also told me there are things in the divorce papers my mother doesn't want me to see. Too many little things that keep building and building upon each other. I'm in such emotional turmoil trying to figure out if I want to flat out ask my dad or not.

You might check with a "Record Retriever" in the county and state where the divorce actions took place. If divorce records are open to the public then you can request a copy of the record and read it yourself.
