How to find a searcher for money or not for money

How does a person just starting this process find a searcher?

Does she/he pay?

How much does it cost?

Getting in touch with my mom was free. Asked the family doctor..., my grandmother had 10 children so the doctors knew her well and she told my mom then mom called me. Getting in touch with my dad cost me $500.00 in 1993. I had a bit of a run around with details but then found him by phone.

Its funny. I was keeping the relinquishment of my son from my sister and her husband and he is a doctor.. and at the same time he was handling adoptions/relinquishments..

How did you find this person? Was it through the internet? or was it local and through word of mouth?

A private investigator not connected directly with searching or helping.. is what was suggested to me..

If we can all add to this thread we can help a newcomer start out..

Ah... I was in Northern California(Bay Area)...I did not have time to spend on searching, I had college courses. So I grabbed a yellow pages and picked a few investigative peoples' numbers. Dialed up said "how much for a college student searching?" I had a few different quotes but $500 was the least expensive. The investigative guy sounded thrilled about me wanting to look up dad. Took him about two weeks to give me some concrete details.

There are a lot of free searchers out there. Its usually best to post in the state or location where the adoption was.
