signing papers
I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this but...
I gave up my daughter in 1971. My parents handeled everything. I remember going to court and signing papers and then going to Catholic Charities to talk to some woman. I don't remember why though. My question is, would my parents have recieved some kind of paper work stateing that I relinquished my daughter like some kind of reciept, not a good choice of word but I can't think right at the moment for another word. This just poped into my head this morning. I can't believe I never thought of this before. There has to be some kind of paper work right? Did anyone else have their parents handle the adoption for them and did they revieve anything that showes it took place. Mary |

I relinquished in 1965 I remember signing the papers in front of a judge.. and I was 21 so there were no parents around.. and I did not get paperwork..
I asked for the paperwork when I found the agency and got my non identifying info.. and I asked in a registered letter and I got nothing.. I have read threads where other women have said they got no paperwork.. The judge told me I had given up all rights and I guess my paperwork was part of this.. Jackie |

Mary, I relinquished my son in 1972 through the County of San Diego's Department of Adoptions. And, yes, I did receive a yellow copy of the voluntary relinquishment papers that I signed. One of my friends went thru Catholic Charities in San Diego the same year, and she received a copy of the forms she signed, as well. Maybe it was a regional thing. Are you sure your parents didn't keep the copy of the relinquishment papers??

Raven,
I don't know if they did or not. Both my parents are gone now. After my dad passed my brother went through all his papers. I never thought of it at the time to go through them myself. After I gave my daughter up no one talked about it except my twin and I, sometimes. So if any papers were found I really don't think my brother would tell me. I had said one time to my other sister I'd like to fine my daughter and she said WHY, just leave it along. I asked her if she heard of any papers and she said mom and dad proubly through them away because they were embarrised. That made me feel sick. I never thought of that and to hear that 36yrs. later.... I guess I'll just ask my brother if he found any papers. I really don't want to but....I'm kind of afraid of what he'll say. Proubly the same as my sister. Thank you Raven, Mary |

I think things like this are part of the journey..
They threw the papers away? That must have hurt.. If they did and maybe they did not.. But to me its about the importance of facing that.. Becoming strong with sorting that.. and that makes you stronger for the next part of the journey.. Lots of challenges.. When I first started looking and I asked for my non identity info I got no reply from the agency.. and I thought.. so be it.. I am not going to push.. A year or so later I pushed and got.. Two steps forward and two back.. Or one step.. hmmm Jackie |
