I am an adpotee. I have tried getting the Long Form birth certificate...no luck it was flagged. I have entered my name on the NY state registry. I hired OmniTrace, no luck. I know for a fact my birthmother was adopted herself, I would think that would make things a little easier. I was adopted through Catholic Charities.
Thanks for any help! Hunter ![]() |

What part of NY are you from? I have a very similar situation over on Long Island. My b-mom was adopted too.

Hi Hunter,
I am an adoptee from upstate NY. I want to recommend to you a NY search list that you can join. You can go to Sylvia's New York adoption page and indicate that you want to join the group. There are many knowledgable people on this list with databases and other ways to search. I hired Omnitrace myself before I knew about this group. Can you email me privately to tell me about your experience with Omnitrace? How long ago did you hire them? Did they take your money and not give you any info? I would be very interested to hear your take on Omnitrace. Thanks, Christina |

What info do you already have? I contacted my agency for non-id. They were as helpful as they could be, I guess. Have you contacted Catholic Charities yet? Don't forget to ask for baptismal information. I was baptized before I was adopted and got my baptismal name (not my last name) but maybe you could get the church/priest- and follow up on the church records. What a pain. Best of luck, I still don't know much more than non id myself.

Hi Hunter,
Is it your birthname you are looking for? Were you born in one of the 5 boroughs? Carolyn |

I too was adopted from New York and is trying to find my b-family. (See my bio under when I found out, I was 33 when I found out) There is a website that I came across sometime ago that is actually a petition to have records unsealed http://www.petitiononline.com/nysarpt1/petition.html I keep hoping that one day this petition will pass and the records will be opened. Also I too was a former client of Omnitrace and had no luck as well ................I wish you lots of luck with your search. Gayle |

Gayle, I'm so sorry you weren't told until you were 33! Wow.
I know my bmom hired Omnitrace without any luck. They supposedely contacted ALL the baby girls born that day in that hospital. Well, they didn't contact me. If you were born in one of the 5 NYC bouroughs the NYC library has the birth index, BUT I think you need to know your birth last name otherwise you would be searching forever. My NY non-id info was basically a waste of time. But, Catholic Charities might have more info than that. Good luck |

Hi i was also adopted in NY, i think i was born in brooklyn, but the birth certificate num,ber doesnt match anything in that book in the library so i begin to alsoquestion that, i posted the below in another section looking for help can you take a look and maybe suggest some things?
Morning All, Ive known i was adopted since i can remember i was brought to my adoptive parents home when i was four. That day is permantly etche in my mind, Ive never felt like a part of the family, and need to find my own family even if they are the ones who gave me away. My situation is i was possibly born and definitly adopted in New York. I was a foster child in the Louise Wise Services, they have recently been closed and there records transferred. My records are located with the city's ACS department. The nice man Mr. Greer who is incharge of records told me that i need to send a letter to the city's attorney for the records release asking for all information he says they will only give you the non identifying info however ask for everything somepeople get by asking the right questions. The reason i need help, is as elequent as i am on various topics. I havent a clue on what to ask with out being emotional. I want to know the things only she can answer. Can you all help Post questions in this thread that i should ask the City's records attorney. Very appreciated, Keisha Nurse 3/4/78 Brooklyn, NY |

I was adopted in NY myself in 1970 through a different agency. I was able to locate my birthmom and birthdad as well as locate my half brother and half sister. I had a great team of people helping me. I would be happy to point you in the right direction or tell you what does or does not work from my experience.

Hello
I am also adopted from Long Island...I have tried to find out info as well on my birth family and have only found out non identifying info... I was born 8/3/69 in St Charles Hospital in Pt. Jefferson...I was in a foster home for 6 months, and than my ** signed the papers..she was only 16 or so. I also hired Omnitrace and they found nothing as well...I was adopted through Nassau County..This whole process is so frustrating! I wish you good luck in your search...let me know if you find out anything! Any advice from anyone would truly be appreciated. Christine ![]()

I just remembered another key element used during my successful search. Joe Soll at Adoption Crossroads www.adoptioncrossroads.org was a huge help and pointed me in the right direction in regards to finding the right "researcher"
The other thing that stands out in my memory is how I wished I didnt use any of the pay up front type search places. I finally found a no find = no fee researcher, definitely the way to go. |

Hello. I was also adopted in ny. I have gotten the most luck with adoptionregistry.com for ny. You type in any info you know (i had NO info) and they will send back some NON-identifying (general:birthweight, her background, etc) info about your birth parents and then if/when your birthparents contact them, you will get identifying info (names, etc). It takes about 6 months but believe me its WORTH IT. Hope this helps. Jen

My non-identifing info from NY was next to nothing. But you are right, if they register you then get (and fairly quickly once they register) the identifying info.
