You go through the county in which your adoption took place. Where were you born?? I was born in Tarrant co./ Fort Worth, TX. and I know a lady who petitions the courts there and she came highly recommeded to me.....I'm gonna be using her when I get the money.

There is a good chance that all you have to do is contact vital statistics or the board of health in your state and they can put you in the right direction. I wish the best of luck to you and let us all know how it goes!!

I just got in the mail today the response from the LA County Superior court that my petition to unseal my records has been APPROVED! This could not have been a better Christmas present!

In case anyone is interested, I sent my petition via fedex signature required just 2 1/2 months ago. I was not expecting to hear so soon. I have to send a check to the adoption division for a copy of the entire file, and a check to the capitol for my original birth certificate. I can't wait! Both will be sent on Monday via Fedex again so I know my checks got there.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

Robin

Thanks for the congrats! Currently I do not live in the state that this all took place in. Where the records are is Los Angeles California. I have typed up my letters to include with the notorized court order, and will be sending them off Monday. This really made my Christmas. I am so excited, I can't wait to get the documents.

I am SO EXCITED for you. I'm sitting on the forms right now. I called my doc and requested a letter to send along with my request but he said unless I have some disease that has a genetic basis he won't send the letter. I'm going to send it off anyway and hope for the best. I'm hopeing that I will get one of thoese good judges. What all did you put in the petition???? Congratulations!!!!!

newlyorphaned,

I've heard from a few differnt people that said they just put the importance of their medical history. They want to start a family, etc...... Since the big Sergeon Generals medical history awareness program has started up the judges have been opening files left and right. From what my non-id says, there are alot of things that run in my family and I am very much considering prtitioning the court for my medical records.

Good luck!!!

Thanks newlyorphaned and Barbara! I am very excited to get all that information. I just sent off the checks via FedEx to the appropriate departments for the records and my original birth certificate. I hope they come quickly!

My circumstances most likely are a bit different than yours, see my birth father died when I was 6 months old, and when my birth mother remarried, her new husband adopted me, hence the sealed records. He died about 6 years after their marriage, and I have been stuck with a birth certificate with his name on it all these years. My birth Mom just recently passed away, and going through all her stuff, there is not ONE thing, not even a picture of my father. See, the guy that adopted me was an *******, very physically and verbally abusive towards me. I'm told he got "rid" of all evidence of my real father. What a jerk! So, these documents will be the only thing that I will have that was my real father's. Basically that is what I put in the letter to the judge. I also mentioned that both my Mother and Grandfather had cancer, and that I have no idea about any of my family on my father's side. I don't know if that little bit of medical talk had anything to do with the judges decision, I am just so happy that I finally get my real birth certificate!

Good luck to all of you!
Robin

Well Guys!

Just sent the petition off today to have my records unsealed, say some prayers okay?
This is like the ultimate act I can take in this search and it's been pretty scarey. Wondering what I will do if the judge turns me down. I wrote a letter to the judge stating that for 46 years I've had to live without my medical history and some of the problems I've encountered because of it. Told them that my children are now grown and planning families of their own and need the information. Then told them about some gyno. problems my daughter is suffering and that my non-id info suggested that my b-mom had them too. Hope it's good enough. Well should hear back in "6 to 8 months" will keep you all posted when I hear something. In the mean time you may have to hold my hand.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you newlyorphaned! It might not take that long, I heard in 2 1/2 months! I have already had correspondence from the vital records office. They sent me a postcard saying they got my request, and it will take 6 weeks for me to get my birth certificate. No word from the adoption department regarding getting a copy of my complete file though, my heart pounds everytime I go to my mailbox!

I also wondered what I would do if the judge turned me down. I think personally I would have hired an attorney to help and re-petition.

Good luck to you, and keep us updated!

Robin

Wink Search&Reunion>Opening Sealed Records

Not that any of you have indicated you are from there, but i believe New Jersey has also opened their records, not to long ago. You may want to check, it may also help what you are doing.

Hey Moo,

Thanks for the support. I hope the postman rings soon for you! I found myself thinking this weekend "I wonder what it would be like to appeal to the California Supreme Court?" Hope I don't have to find out. Let us know when your info comes in!
