Sealed Birth Records
Unfortunately in the State of New Jersey once the records are sealed.......it's a done deal. The only possible way to have access to your sealed record is for extreme medical reasons. I petitioned the court and was denied. If I had been born before 1940 I would have access to the records as the laws had not been enacted until 1941 (I think) Sealed records in NJ cannot be opened for 99 years from the date of birth of the record holder weather they are alive or dead. Also unfortunately is the fact that even if you should happen to find your birth parents in the meantime, even with their consent the sealed records cannot be opened.
I feel your pain.........I have it myself. It infurates me that I have no rights to my own history. Choices were made for me to conceal my birth parents. They made a mistake and cleared it up by adopting me out.........they went on with their lives with their mistake cleared up for them and left me with the consequences. All people like us can do is lobby strongly for our rights in the NJ Legislature........sign every petition you can for Adoptee's rights. |

I MIGHT BE OF SOOM HELP
MY NAME IS ROBIN, I WAS ALSO BORN IN NJ. JERSEY CITY, HUD SON COUNTY. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO OPEN UP YOUR ADOPTION RECORDS, YOU WOULD HAVE TO WRITE A LETTER TO THE JUDGE AND TELL HIM WHY YOU WANT THEM OPENED. OF A MATTER OF FACT, I JUST SENT MY LETTER OUT TO THE JUDGE TO DAY. YOU MIGHT WANT TO GET A HOLD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HEATH AND SENIOR SERVICES FOR MORE INFO. OR YOU COULD GO TO WWW.STATE.NJ.US/HEALTH FOR SOME INFO. THIS IS EVERYTHING THAT I HAVE DONE PLUS SOME. IV BEEN SEARCHING FOR 4 YEARS NOW. I HOPR THAT THIS INFO HAS HELPED SOME. ROBIN

Hi! My name is Beverly and I was born in New Brunswick, N.J. in1950 and I've been going through the same thing. They say the only way you can get the records unsealed is if you have a life threatening Illness. By the time they unseal them it might be to late anyway. I called the Trenton Adoption Registery and they do a free search. She didn,t even think she would find the records for my brothers, because it has been about 47 years, but she did and she knows there adopted names but she won't give them to me. Anyway she said she sent letters and checked motor vechicles in New Jersey, and got know reply on the letters and said neither one of them have a license in New Jersey. They don't spend much time on it either, but it's worth the try. I found my one aunt . I was looking for my father and my grandfather has the same name and my grandfather is deceased, so I got the obituary hoping family would be listed in it, but it wasn't, so I got a copy of the will and that's how I found my Aunt. She told me my father died and I have to brothers but she doesn't know where they are and she doesn't know where my mother is either. I'm not giving up! I don' t think it's right for the State to keep our birth rights sealed.we should have the right to know our family and decide between us if we want to have contact. Good Luck!

There seems to be some progress being made with New Jersey Legislation. We should find out within a week or so if this bill will be voted on this year. If so, we need everyone to write their representatives and voice their opinions - we need support to get this bill through.
