I have recently discovered that, because I was adopted when I was only three days old, I do not HAVE an Original Birth Certificate. This makes sense, but at the same time, it confuses me -- my adoption was not finalized until 1986 (when I was about 2 years old) so I am wondering what sort of document existed until then confirming my birth date, name, etc. Was I just a social security number until that time, or is there some document I don't know about?

unless yours was a black market or illegal adoption there is most definately a sealed Original birth certificate. do you have an amended certificate with your adoptive parents' names on it? At the time that this was issued the original which contained your birth mother's(and father's if avail) info & your original name was sealed. Most agency adoptions do not issue the original to adoptive parents, although I have heard of private adoptions that do as well as the order of adoption.
