Most adoptees dream of the day when simply going to a website will give them the type of answers you seek. You should navigate the forums and find one for the state you were born in. I'm sure the "Search Guru" will have a post there to advise you on what to do within your state.
Hospitals typically do not release medical records to adoptees, or anyone who requests them with only a date of birth, etc..., and no name. If you were adopted in Tennessee, Oregon, Kansas, Alaska, Alabama, or even Delaware, you may be able to request your records from social services. If you were adopted in another state, you can petition the courts, but most judges will not release records unless you can prove you have a terminal ailment and need contact with birthfamily regarding a life or death situation. You may be lucky enough to be granted an intermediary from your state. This person will try to contact your birthparent and then only if they are willing to have contact with you, foster a reunion. Contact the social service agency for the state you were adopted in and request Non-identifying information, if nothing else. This will serve to whet your appetite for the entire truth, but also give you some hints about the heritage that should automatically be your right to know. Feel free to visit my site for my story and links that may help your search. Ray Buffer www.adoptee.2ya.com www.obc.2ya.com |

I was just told yesterday from the district courts that the person who was adopted is the only one who can get this type of info. Call the districts courts where you were born and ask them what dept you would need to speak with to get this info. I have a sister who was born on Nov 24th 1971, in Hutchinson Kansas in Reno county. When I called the info line for Hutchindson Kansas this is what they said. So I guess that certain states will give some info and others won't

Jaime, do your parents have a copy of the adoption decree? This will tell you which county completed the adoption and that will tell you which state you need to petition. Good luck!
