Poor Speller and Reader-Need help

I have a 12 year old son who is ADHD. He is having problems with spelling and reading. Over the last few years we have had problems getting him the help he needs due to the fact he went to a private school and the public school didn't want to help.

Anyway, I am wanting to find a computer program for him to use to help increase his skills and one that he enjoys. Any recommendation would be appreciated.

We are moving him to a new school this fall. I am hoping that they will be able to help.

Leigh: What are his main problems. Is it decoding? Can he sound out the words? Does he comprehend what he reads? How often does he read and what sort of material? I'm a reading specialist so I was just curious.

Hi! I am a language arts teacher and without knowing the exact situation I would try to make sure that you are attenpting to cover these topics with al three learning styles (most of us learn by combination) auditory, visual, and hands-on. The computer can help as it covers two of these, but also a lot of verbal praise and understanding. After all, most adults have trouble with these topics to some degree. Also many children I have worked with have made massive gains after the skills were put into perspective (WHY do I have to improve this or learn this?). MY BF is a librarian and also suggests finding books that interest the child at the proper reading level so not to discourage or prevent progress. The key is to have them read a page and if they find more than two words they need help with it's too hard, no words, it's too easy. I can send links to free lessons online that we use. Some of our students have improved their reading levels by 6 grades in 5 months by the proper focus, and attention and learning style. Hope that was helpful in some way! Good luck~

Jen

He may have learning disabilities...

Since ADHD and LDs tend to go hand-in-hand. My son has both -- and he's gifted to boot. If that's the case, he needs specialized work using Orton Gillingham methods (or one of the several other widely accepted ones, such as Wilson). If you are moving him to a public school, you will need to ask to have him tested. With ADHD, he should already be eligible for an IEP (Individual Education Plan).

Good luck and feel free to PM me if you like.

Robin
