Homeschooling Your Young Child

Are there other families out there that are considering homeschooling their young child? Perhaps a pre-1st grade child? There are many great resources out there to help you get started. Homeschooling is not for everyone, however, it can be a very rewarding experience. There are also great social groups for homeschoolers and many extracurricular activities. Does anyone belong to a great support group for homeschooling?

I am considering homeschooling our now second grader next year. He just needs extra time to learn and learns at a slower pace. He is very much wanting me to look into the possibility. I am going to night school for an education degree. I have one year left before I student teach. So I would have the time to spend with him. There are a lot of good websites and support online for homeschooling. I have been to abcteach and they do have support there as well as lessons and ideas. I just put homeschool in a search agent and came up with tons of sights. Some reccomend texts and resources.

Home schooling pre-first grade is pretty relaxed. My daughter is four and I claim to be home pre-schooing her because we spend time reading, talking and playing every day. I would say the caution is to not get too academic too soon. Kids learn best by playing at this age. For example, understanding fractions begins by kids playing with blocks (they are divided into halves, quarters, etc.) A lot of fun, enriching things can be done before 1st grade that can make learning so much fun they don't know they are learning.

I worry about people trying to teach all the letters of the alphabet and how to read before 1st or 2nd grade but if they fall into it naturly fine.
