Question Mysterious bad breath!

My dd just recently (March 5-ish or so) has gotten bad breath....so I cranked up the toothbrushing time, added floss and mouthwash and scheduled a dentist appt. Her breath was so bad, that I figured she needed a bath the first time I remember smelling it. Well, the dentist said no cleaning needed, no cavities and suggested it was systemic and that we should start feeding her yogurt. She eats a yogurt EVERY morning without exception (for the past 2 months or so), so I added a fiber chewable supplement every other day and scheduled a dr appt. The dr said give her yogurt and fiber, I was already doing this! Now I am at a loss......I thought it was constipation, but I monitor her toilet closely and she's moving her bowels daily (regular looking too) BUT the bad breath still hasn't gone away....it hasn't even gotten better..... It smells like a dirty diaper. I even made sure she wasn't just eating the unthinkable.....but even her freshly brushed teeth can't mask the odor that still lurks. I am at a loss, so I am appealing to the general population of parents to help me out....has ANYONE experienced mysterious bad breath in a 4-5 yr old???

I did with my 7 yr old son and come to find out he was constipated but was still having **'s. I didn't ,and still don't really understand. He still doese at times but not all the time. My son is on meds, which can be a result of this also. Is she on any medication that might be doing this? Sorry I don't have much advice, but if she is on meds you might check into it. Good Luck

not on any neds at all....and this was an all of a sudden one day it was nasty.....I have considered that food or something is lodged in her nasal passage and rotting/causing post nasal drip

I'm making a dr appt again to see.

Also, is her diet balanced? Some of the side effects of a high protein diet is bad breath (BTDT) and it got so bad, that I actually stopped the high protein intake. Too much of a good thing is not always so good.

Also, does she have a sore throat or anything? Sometimes when people get strep their throat/breath stinks due to the infection in there.

Good luck. Poor kid, hope you guys can get to the bottom of this very soon!

good docs can sniff breath and determine what the cause might be. specific health problems leave certain breath smells. Hope the doc can figure it out,

Lisa

It seems as if she has ULTRA MILD seasonal allergies....just enough to cause post nasal drip and it was starting to develop a sinus infection. I haven't checked closely yet, but it seems much less potent as the nasal drip has gone away (allergy meds)

My 5 year old had bad breath as well. It turned out that even though he wasn't sick a lot his tonsils were infected and smelling badly. I haven't noticed bad breath once since they took them out.

I had to get my son one of those tongue scrapers and make sure he's well hydrated. No smelly breath since!

When DH was with his first wife, her oldest daughter had breath that "smelled like something died". It turned out that she had crammed a piece of tissue or TP up her nose and it was rotting in her nasal cavity. It was causing the horrid breath. The doctor removed it, and the problem was gone. Funny how your nose can make your breath stink!

All three of our sons have terrible breath and both our dentist and pedi said that it was caused by their allergies. So I guess we are in for the long haul of bad breath!

My daughter has smelly breath She is a mouth breather. So I make sure she brushes her tongue and drinks something with vitamin C OJ is best. This seems to take care of it.

Another thing that can cause bad breath that I noticed hasn't been mentioned is reflux or upset stomach.
