Do we need to renew russian passports?
I searched the threads, but all of the discussions on this were somewhat old.....
Trying to figure out if we should renew our kiddos russian passports...... From my quick look, its an expensive process (about 460$ per child),with only a few ways to make it happen. The main one seems to be through Russian Passport Services. Since we don't have plans of returning to Russia until they are a bit older, I am tempted to wait and just get them a new one when we need it. Does anyone have suggestions......is it 'easier' to keep it current than go back years later and get a new one? I have to decide quickly, their expires at the end of this month, so I have to get them out soon if that is the best avenue..... Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks!

this is one of those topics that surfaces from time to time and no one really seems to have a definitive answer.
the most common belief is that you do NOT have to keep them renewed... and that you can renew them when you are ready to travel.

I'm laughing at the timeliness of this as I just had an e-mail from a friend who is taking her son back to visit Russia, and she is having a nightmare of a time getting a new Russian passport him. They hadn't planned to go back to visit this soon, so let his passport lapse. Now, an opportunity to travel with a group from his baby home has presented itself and she's scrambling.
She was telling me to be sure to keep Lexi's Russian passport valid if we ever plan to go back. You don't have to keep them up-to-date. But, my friend is finding it more expensive and more difficult to get a new passport than she would have. I suspect it's also because when you're planning to travel you're on a deadline and (as we all well remember) there's no rush in Russia. ;> I probably will keep Lexi's up-to-date.
