Adoption from Italy?

I just read that Bill and Guiliania from E are adopting from Italy. She goes on about all the needy kids in orphanages in Naples. With birth rates being worrisomely low per the Italian gov't and the population decreasing there, I found this to be a remarkable statement. I've been googling orphans and adoption in Italy and I'm not finding anything to support this. It doesn't even look like Italy is open to foreign adoptions.

I am not questioning their intentions and support anyone's desire to adopt, but her quotes make it sound like there is a dire need in Naples, which is surprising.

Anyone else with thoughts on this? Here's a link to an article.

According to the US Dept. of State statistics, there have been no adoptions from Italy to the US in recent years. Even though there may be Italians living in poverty, there are few adoptions and orphaned children are placed domestically if they need a home.

Italian society as a whole frowns on the practice of adoption...it's very rare. When unplanned pregnancies occur, the parents tend to either get married, or extended family members step up to the plate and help out.

ITALY | Intercountry Adoption

Here is the link to the State Department site where they talk about adoptions from Italy. Only 2 adoption visas have been issued in the last five years. Being rich, famous, and from there may well help them, but in reading the article I get the impression they really don't know anything about the process yet. I think it is going to be much more difficult than they think.

HI,
On that link posted above, it states that there have been "no adoptions recorded for Italy" - where is it you are finding that there were 2? Thanks!

If you click on 'Expand All' it is under Hague Convention Information. My personal guess is most likely they were relative situations.
