We are off to the Endocrinologist

Buttercup continues to grow at record speeds. She is by far the tallest and heaviest child in any of her kindy groups. The odd thing is that her diet and excercise levels are really good so you would think she would lose some of that baby fat.
We switched Pediatricans this year and she agrees that something is not quite right.
She referred us to an Endocrinologist and we have an appointment for next week.
I'm not really sure what to expect. Everything I've ever read about Endocrinologists have been for smaller children who are not growing. Her thyroid tests came back with in normal limits.
Just curious if anyone else has a child with similiar issues.

Thanks!

We just started seeing a pedi endo for DD for precocious puberty (ACKKKK ) and 'short stature'...she's fallen to the less than 2nd percentile for height and is falling on the weight, so we are on the more common side.

We've only had one appointment and are waiting on bloodwork results...which take up to three weeks (chromosone testing.) We have a follow up in January...but that will probably be changed once she gets the results. We have already talked about suppressing the puberty and possibly addressing the growth issues thru growth hormone...but really for us it was just a lot of (unanswered) questions at the first visit.

Good luck and man how scary is it how similiar our lives are right now...

Good luck at the endo. We have one but haven't gone in ages. This next time around they'll dx Alyona w/ a form of dwarfism. They were waiting to see if she'd grow, if it was PIissues or whatever else it could be. Her results were all normal for bloodwork. She would w/out a doubt qualify for GHT. Not going to do it though. She is almost 10.5 yo and weighs 38 lbs. She's about 43" I think. Nik has already passed her & his birthfamily has quite the short stature. We roll w/ the punches here--LOL. The first visit at the endo from my experience is you accomplish absolutely nothing. It's a lot of talking, history, some measuring, asking all kinds of quesitons and then deciding on bloodwork. We were fortunate in that we got to do the bloodwork the same day. And answers a few weeks later. These EE kiddos are a puzzle at time. Sorry to hear you're going through this. Though I know this is not your case, some parents find their kids are not the ages that they thought they were. One of my friends in CA had her girls' bone ages done. Instead of being 9yo, she was actually 12yo. OUr daughter at the endo has a delayed bone growth of 2 years. Hard to distinguish facts w/ such sketchy history on some of our kids. We are beginning to wonder if Nik is actually 7 years old. His immunization records were completely falsified. Don't ask. Discovered this a few months after being home. URGHH. So, wondering what else they lied about. He just now lost one tooth but that is ONLY b/c his sister knocked it out. Dentist was wondering about his age as well. Usually they can tell. Sorry so long-winded Christina. Just honestly wanted to wish you luck at the endo today & do hope in a few weeks you have som eanswers. The worst part is not knowing.

Thanks ladies! I always thought if we ended up at the Endos it would be for DS. Never even occurred to me that they would bring this up for girlie. She was 5 in June and weighs 67lbs and is 48 inches tall. That's as tall as DS and heavier than DS who is 33 months older than her.

Maybe she's just going to be a tall girl. And that's fine. Its just that she has never hit a point where she slowed down in growing. She never levels off. She's grown another 2 inches just since her physical in June (and gained 5lbs). We met her at 4 months and she was 10lbs. She was still 10lbs when we brought her home at 5 months. So we are lucky, we do have all her growth documented from a very early age.

It will be interesting to see what they say!

Hopefully, she is just tall. She is actually a tad bigger than my 8 year old. Mine is just shy of 49 inches and around 62 pounds.

Good luck!

Good luck - I hope you get answers for sure. It can be scary no matter which way it goes. Our oldest (not adopted...but similar in growth)...was HUGE up until age 8/9...then he evened out with the other kids. He just seemed to hit his growth spurt much earlier and LONGER...

Do you stats on her birthparents? We do know DD's first mom was tiny...so DD may just be tiny as well. DD is only 44 inches tall and weighs in at 47'ish pounds...but everything about her is teeny tiny...in proportion just little. You should see how tiny her fingers and hands are...

Good luck!

There was a problem with the paperwork so our facilitator had to drive out to DDs hometown hours away and get signatures. She met the first family. Father, Mother and 4 year old sister. Our facilitator was like 5 foot 1 and she said that the first mother was the tiniest woman (so I assume she is quite a bit smaller than 5 foot one) and that the father was the largest man she had ever seen. So that helps right? Not really.

She could just take after the father and be really tall. Which is fine. I worry about precosious puberty thing and want to be sure that there isnt something we're missing. But I did not request the Endo visit. The new pedi immediately suggested it after looking at her growth chart. It had never occurred to me that there might be a problem since we know how tall the father was. I worry more about her weight around her middle as she is very active and eats healthy.

My (Kazakh) daughter turned 5 in Sept and is 47inches tall, she's only 42lbs though. I've never considered there to be a problem, although she's a lot taller than any of the other girls, there is one boy the same size, his dad is 6'8"

Can you update and let us know what the endo says? Thanks !

Precocious puberty can be stopped as long as it is caught early...so don't worry about that.

Let us know how it goes....

Thanks for the heads up! Our appointment is this afternoon, right after Kindy ends and before lunch. I may have to bribe her with lunch at the nearby Rainforest Cafe if it looks like there will be a lot of blood drawn. I appreciate the warning! I had not even thought of that.
