Sakhalin region
We will be travelling to Sakhalin in November to meet a little girl who has been referred to us.I was wondering if anyone on this forum has been there and has any advice

I have not been to this region, but I fould a couple sites that might interest you.

That's great news! Congratulations! While we were in Vladivostok earlier this year, we met a family who was in process of adopting form Sakhalin. They had to visit Vladivostok for their consulate interview and sent a courier to Moscow. I'll see if I can find their blog for you.

9/3/08 Signed up w/agency 9/8/08 Sent I600A form without Homestudy 9/20/08 Homestudy started 9/22/08 Mailed fingerprints to FBI 10/2/08 FBI OK'd us 10/15/08 Biometrics done for I600A 11/24/08 Homestudy mailed to complete I600A 12/15/08 Dossier to Russia 1/20/09 I171H received 4/9/09 Received 2 refferals! Boy and Girl! 4/15/09 Now have 1 of 2 referrals. Still waiting on 1! 4/21/09 Received 2nd referral! 4/28/09 Accepted 2nd referral and waiting on 1st trip! 5/11/09 Child #2 is no longer available, back to waiting for another referral. 5/27/09 Still waiting for trip #1 for referral #1. Paperchasing to submit new dossier to a different region for referral #2. 6/15/09 Dossier done. Waiting for referral for #2. Still waiting on travel dates for #1. 6/17/09 Travel dates for #1! 6/25/09 Decided to complete adoption for #1 and return for #2 about 6 months after being home with #1. 6/27/09-7/4/09 Trip #1 completed

Our son, adopted at 10 months, now 5 1/2 is from Sakhalin. When we went to Sakhalin we were able to complete everything in 1 trip (many years ago) so we were there and home in 1 week. The judges in the region can be tuff, but I hear all of Russia has become the same. The island was very nice...but VERY cold (the winds from the water are constant).
My best advice is to fly through Seoul. We flew from JFK to Anchorage to Seoul, to Sakhalin...then Moscow and JFK. We had adopted 2x's previously and always flew through Moscow then onto the Far East of Russia. Flying through Seoul in that direction was MUCH easier on our bodies, while we were still exhausted, it was much easier to adapt to the time change (15 hours). Also make sure you head out to the Open Market if you get the chance...great deals are to be found there. Have a great trip....

Thanks for all your replies. We'll actually be coming from Ireland so it'll be a four hour flight to Moscow and then 8hrs to Sakhalin. Not looking forward to that I must admit.
I'm not really looking forward to the cold either but it must be done. Am looking forward to meeting the little girl of course.
