did you have to take your money belt off when going through airport security?

After all of the help I got from this forum I went out and bought a waist money belt for me and my mother to travel with. Did you have to take it off in Moscow when going through security or can you leave it on? Also, if they don't let you keep it on, can you simply put it in your bag descretely before you leave the plane or does it have to go through the scanner on its own? I have heard some places make you take it off, but I wasn't sure if that meant you take it off and put it through by itself in front of everyone, or if you can put it in a carry on bag or something. Thanks.

I am done with my dossier paperwork. The only thing I am waiting for is my I-600A approval in the mail and then I am done!
I handed in my dossier to my agency on June 17, 2009 but one thing had to be redone so it was officially complete on July 14, 2009. Let the waiting begin!

We never had to remove ours, but we made sure ours had plastic zippers so they weren't even detected by the metal detectors. No one even knew we had them on, so no one asked us to remove them. And we did not mention them to anyone, including security.

money belt

I didn't have to take mine off at either the Moscow International or Moscow Domestic airport. It was on my waist under my clothes and never had any problem.

My husband ended up having to take it off at all security checkpoints but his was noticable under his shirt. He tried to wear it at his waist and it kept falling (he has no hips).

I did have to take mine off. A suggestion~ if you are carrying a backpack as your carryon, they often will have two zippers that connect on the main bag. I got a little lock to attach the holes of the zippers. When I had to go through security pat down check points in Northern Ireland (I was there during some rough patches) and the Eastern block countries, I would discreetly remove my money belt in a bathroom stall, put it in my backpack and CARRY my backpack to the security checkpoint. The lock would be a little extra sense of security for me and if they asked me to unlock that portion for some reason, I was able to actually see the security guard going through the contents. This worked for me several times. Just a suggestion.

If they realize you're wearing it, they will probably make it be scanned separately -- for instance, if it contains any metal that sets off the metal detectors, or if you're "randomly pulled" for additional screening and they find it. (This happened to me.) However, if it doesn't contain any metal and you're not pulled for the more invasive check, there's a good chance you will be able to wear it through the metal detector.

If you choose to take it off for scanning, you can put it inside your carry-on bag and send it through the scanner inside the bag. However, if airport security finds it, they will insist that it's scanned by itself. (They do this with anything unusual they find in your bag or on your person in a search, not just money belts. Last week my library book had to go through the scanner by itself.)

We just returned from Moscow on the 4th of July. We both wore a waist type belt to split the money. It was worn so you couldn't see it and only the pull tab of the zipper was metal, so not enough to set anything off. In our airport, they don't use those x-ray type machines yet, just the walk thru detectors.

Coming back from Moscow thru the DME airport they only used the x-ray type. But it didn't matter because we didn't wear the money belt on the return trip...not enough money coming home to make it worth the effort. I did think at the time that I was glad we weren't wearing it because I would THINK it would be noticeable on the x-ray machine. I would have found a bathroom or corner to take it off and put in my carry on if I had been wearing it just to avoid it altogether. But as others have said, that doesn't mean they wouldn't pull it from your luggage to be run separately.

I wore one (I was traveling by myself), and was concerned about this too. Going in, no problem, coming out (home), they wanted me to take it off. I lifted my sweater, and unzipped it, the woman looked in and felt it, and all was fine. 2nd trip, o.k. each way. I like the idea of a good plastic zipper though!

Leave it On

After 4 trips to Russia and 2 trips to Kaz, I can tell you I never had to remove my money belt. Don't put coins in there obviously.
