OT- St. Petersburg

I am planning to staying in St. Petersburg for a few days on my next trip over to do some sightseeing. I was hoping that someone who has been to St. Pete's might have a recommendation for hotel or any other suggestions. Thanks, Cindy

On trip #2, we stayed at the Angleterre, which was great! It's right by St Isaac's cathedral. The staff is excellent. There is an onsite restaurant, and we were there with 3 other couples from our agency. Highly recommend it.

We stayed at the Marriott Renaissance using Marriot points. Lovely! Fabulous breakfast, and we really tanked up there because food was so expensive everywhere other than those tasty pancake wraps sold by street vendors (ate a lot of those.) Walking distance to St. Issac's, the shopping district, etc. King bed for us; couch in the living area for Julia, then age 6. TV in both rooms, though mostly we watched movies on our laptop. Very helpful, attentive staff. Nicest sheets on which I've ever slept.

We traveled to St. Pete's at the end of trip 1 to sightsee for a few days. We found a place on Rick Steve's website called the The Nevsky Inn. It's run by a British couple. The B&B was booked, but they also had a couple of apartments. We stayed in one just off Nevsky Prospekt close to the Hermitage. It was clean and really inexpensive. The hotel arranged a driver to pick us up at the train station and also drove us to the airport for our departure.

My favorite was visiting the Russian Museum. I can't wait to visit again Have fun!

The Ambassador was nice too. Stayed at the Angleterre trip 1. Nothing beats the view of St Issacs. 2nd trip we were at the Ambassador, and I think the service was better, the food was light years ahead.

Ambassador was walking distance to the mall (forget the name) but there was a lot of shops, restaurants along the way. Loved walking by the canals.

Have a great time. We loved the city and can't wait until we can go for fun.

I'm back!

What are you looking for in a hotel? A good price? Lots of amenities?

What are you interested in? Art? History?

When are you travelling?

I think you must see the fountains at Peterhoff is you're here in the summer. You can tour the palace or not, but the fountains are a must. You can get there by boat (hydrofoil). You catch it right behind the Hermitage.

Catherine's Palace at Tsarskoye Selo is beautiful. It's a short train ride out of the city.

Everyone will ask you if you went to the Hermitage. And, it has more than just art. But, if you're not a museum person, don't go. Take a picture outside of it instead. (I've never done the Louvre in Paris, though, so I'm a bit biased.)

See a ballet at the Marinsky. Or an opera if you prefer.

The circus is interesting.

The Church on Spilled Blood is stunning. It's prettier than St. Basil's, I think. It's right by the souvenier market.

Peter and Paul Fortress is across the river from the Hermitage. It's where all the tsars are buried. The cannon is shot there every day at noon.

There are all sorts of museums. I love the Ethnographic Museum. It is basically a social history museum. There is a siege museum that is interesting. And, I've not been to it, but Peter's "freak museum" is quite popular.

Take a canal ride to tour the city. There is an English speaking tour that leaves around ten o'clock on Fontanka canal...I think near 52 Fontanka. (Oh--ten o'clock AT NIGHT. It's White Nights right now.)

Bring eyeshades so you can sleep and bug repellent.

Let me know how I can help you plan!

Kate,
in Russia
