Ethnicities

My husband and I are a young military couple looking to internationally adopt. Originally I had been leaning toward the asian countries but we are two young for most of their programs. I am 20 and my husband is 24. We wouldn't be looking to start the process, until next year however, I know things can change drastically. I have heard that there are children of asian descent in Russian orphanages who have a hard time being adopted because of their ethnicities. Is anyone familiar with that? We are open to either gender, and mild to moderate special needs.

Yes in parts of Russia there are asian children and they likely have a harder time being adopted. There are also children of Romany (gypsy) descent who are considered minorities. (My youngest son is Romany)

There are regions in Russia that you can find children of Asian Descent.

Sounds like maybe Kazakhstan would be the fit. Predominately Asian and EuroAsian Children are available.

Good Luck

I also wanted to mention Kyghrstan (come one people...I have NO idea how to spell it)...we have a frew forum friends here who've adopted from there and I'm sure they can tell you more. I think the process is a bit more stable than Russia right now...

Thank you for the suggestion, I can't seem to spell the name of the country either! lol I am very interested in this country, but there is some turmoil going on and the programs seem to be currently suspended

I transferred from the program in Kyrgyzstan to Russia this year. The program there has been on hold for a year now, and there are 65 families who have met their referrals, but are unable to bring them home. I wish it weren't so, but it's not a good prospect right now.

Kretz, it's Mel - c'mon - you can't spell Kyrgyzstan?

LOL when I first heard about of it from my agency I couldn't even find it on a map!

I'm sorry to second what jeanne said; the program is suspended. It is a tragedy for so many. I have the most amazing little girl in the world from Kyrg. The kids are great. Lots of prayers out there that the country will reopen.

DS was adopted from Chita City Siberia area on the China/Mongolia borders. There you will find Russian/Chinese or Russian/Mongolian children who have a more difficult time being adopted.

We brought our son home from Moscow about 6 weeks ago. Both of his birth parents were Kyrgyzstan citizens who were in Moscow looking for work. When we went to the orphanage, we were allowed to go into the playroom and we saw at least 2 other children with Asian features just in that group. We were told that the Russian people wouldn't "even look" at our son because of his Kyrgyz background and Asian features.

Just FYI, our process from beginning to end (when we turned our paperwork in and when we brought our son home) was a little over 3 months. We had an excellent agency if you'd like to PM me for more info.

Good luck!

Dawn

Dawn, that is an amazingly short time frame!! Wow.
Can I ask for an estimate on the cost? And, how many times did you have to go there and for how long? How old is your child?
(I'm not adopting right now... got my hands full!! Just curious.)

City of Ulan Ude is another possibility. Due W of Chita, near Lake Baikal (sp?)
