Yes, Yes. Yes. We were in the exact same situation last year. His first year of kindergarten, our son was smaller than most of the kids in his class, turning 6 in the summer and a little behind academically.

We decided to repeat. Now, he is taller than all but 1 child in his class, the oldest by several months but he is WAY more confident, is a leader in his class, has many friends and is academically at the top of his class.

He got a different teacher the 2nd year so I don't know if he realized he was repeating.

There is so much reading that happens in Kindergarten and you want him to master that before he enters 1st grade. He may be a little bored but he will build confidence because he knows the skill already.

I did not regret it!

Trust your gut about what is best for your child, you know him more than any school person does. A no repeat policy almost kept dd from getting an extra year of preschool. I fought all year to keep her in preschool and extra year and finally won when her doctor called the school and stated that she was concerned that her birthday was wrong (after all that can happen in IA) and not in late Aug. but more likely Sept or Oct. Stupid really but the battle was more than worth it in terms of dd being at such a different place and so much more ready for K than she would have been. She wound up spending the year with a teacher who was just the right match for her and runs her class like a K class. She even had homework (seriously in preschool!). I'm told the K she is going to does not do homework...will be interesting to see how it goes but I sure worry less with how she is doing now versus a year ago. Hope you have the same success regardless of the path you choose.
