Night Time Potty Training....
Ah, I know this has been discussed previously.....but...DD has been perfectly day potty trained since age 2.5, no problems whatsoever...
But she still wears a pull-up at night, which I have not worried about at all, but she is now four and I am wondering when she might be ready for panties at night and how you get them ready for it? Even when I limited her drinks, she rarely has a dry night. Rarely. She wants to wear panties to bed, though. How to do get them ready for staying dry all night? We tried it once, but it only took about 90 minutes for her to wet the bed and she has only had 2-3 dry nights. We eat dinner at 6 and I have tried stopping her drinks at 6:30 pm for her 8 pm bedtime. What has worked for your kiddos?

I don't know if this will make you feel better or worse, but I have a 10 year old who still wets at night. And believe me, no one wants him to be able to stay dry more than him. We gave tried anything and everything, been to the doctors, etc. The doctors say he will eventually outgrow it but is just not within his control. (Several people have posted on other threads that their children finally stopped during puberty.)
My daughter stayed dry at night pretty much from the time she potty trained. My younger son is inconsistent at age 5 so we still use pullups at night as back-up. Unless the child is purposefully wetting (which doesn't sound like the case with your daughter) in my experience I honestly don't think you can teach kids to stay dry. If someone has a miracle cure for bedwetting I would be first in line to try it because we have been working on it for 7 years. ![]() Good luck!

My oldest had this issue until puberty. He hated it! There were medications that we tried but they would only work for a few nights and then stop. So we started saving those for overnights and camp outs. He just used pull ups and then good nights at home. He is just such a sound sleeper. I think he still doesn't get up at night, but his bladder is bigger and can hold it. Sometimes when he was little I would wake him up to go to the bathroom a couple of times at night. Once right before I went to bed (I am a night owl) and then dh who was getting up earlier than me would get him up at like 5 to go. That helped some, but then our schedules changed and it was no longer something we could do, and he never woke up all the way anyway.

When my daughter was dry by day, at 2.75 years of age, I told her that she could decide when to try underwear at night. It was her choice; I showed her where the pullups were, and where the underwear was, and she could choose whatever she wanted.
She chose pullups until she was almost four. When she decided that she was ready for underwear, I had her put off trying until the weekend, in case there was a middle of the night wet bed to change. Then, I told her that I would awaken her once at night to go to the toilet, to make it easier for her to stay dry. I got her up once, around the time that I went to bed. She never fully awakened; I just held her under the arms and marched her to the bathroom, and as soon as she pulled down her pants and sat on the toilet, she urinated. On autopilot, she wiped and put on her pants. I then marched her back to bed, where she immediately fell sound asleep. That first night, she awoke dry. And she never had a single nighttime accident thereafter! I kept taking her to the bathroom once a night for several months, then abandoned the practice because it was clear that Becca had no difficulty keeping control without this help. Sharon

What works best...TIME and understanding that this is 100% normal!
DD day time trained at 28 months...and still at almost age 8 has about one accident per month. We have only been out of oull-ups for less than one year. According to the pedi urologist...he would not even consider 'treating' or 'training' DD until she was over age 7. I believe 23% of 5 year olds are NOT nighttime trained and about 15% to 20% of 7 year olds are not trained. A quick google of 'nocturnal enuresis' should make you feel better.

Thanks, guys! Since she just turned 4, I have not really been worried about putting her in a pull up at night at all, or do I think anything is wrong at all. I was just wondering if there's anything to do to help them along or is it best to just wait until they start having dry pull ups?
Also, she has expressed that she wants to sleep in panties, but she does not have dry nights. She doesn't wake up yet when she has to go at night, I think her body isn't ready yet. I might try taking her to the potty once at night, though and see if that helps her. She says she wants to be a big girl.....

With DS, he was daytime trained at 2.2 years old, every night he had a wet pullup. At 3, we went cold turkey and he had some accidents, but it was only about two weeks of transition to underwear. DD was daytime trained from 20 months and soaking wet at night in her pull up until 4. We tried intermittenly between 3 to 4, but nothing worked. At 4, we switched to underwear but we get her up around 11-12pm when we go to bed to use the bathroom. She is just a really sound sleeper. She is dry 90% of the time, but doubt she would be if we didn't get her up to go to the bathroom.
DS #2 just got out of diapers at 2.5 for daytime and I think I'll work on nighttime sooner for him. I sometimes think that by waiting until later for DD, it's made it harder on her. Don't know why I have this theory, but it seems to be.

We kept our kids in pullups at night until they were consistantly dry in the mornings. Our daughter wore pullups at night until after she turned six years old then started wearing panties and staying dry overnight that year. Our son was wearing underwear and staying dry by the time he was four years old. It just depends on the child and how their bodies develop and function.

you are on the right track for limiting liquids and food before bed unfortunatly it does take 3-4 hours for liquid to work its way through your system so you had said before that it only took 90 min before she had wet the bed is it possible to move dinner up around an hour or push her bedtime forward an hour? just so that you can work in the 3-4 hour time frame before food and drink and bed.

The alarm worked for my daughter. We started it about 2 months ago (she turns 8 tomorrow). It only took her 6 nights on it! Yea! Anyway, turns out that food insensitivity make her create more urine at night. So, if she has certain types of food, she wakes up 1 - 2 times a night by herself to go to the bathroom.
You can check out this link. Eliminating them helped us a lot too. Urology - "Happy bladder" diet - Children's Memorial Hospital (Chicago, IL)

Kay - I found that link really interesting. My older son doesn't have most of the things on the list anyway because he is a super picky eater, but we had figured out that milk with dinner or ice cream for dessert made him wet more. Eliminating dairy with dinner hasn't helped him stay dry but it has kept him from wetting through every night. It is kind of nice to see that there is a basis for it!
I think you and I have talked about the sleep alarm before. It didn't help us at all, but I do know it does work for a lot of people! ![]()

Debbie - try lactose free milk for a couple of days and take him off all other dairy. See if that works. Lactose is the big one for us.
ETA - how old was he when you tried the alarm - if it was a while ago, he may be old enough for it now. And, was it the one that attached to his underwear? If he can sleep though that he is one heck of a sleeper - that thing is obnoxious!

Hmmmmm . . . seems obvious now you say it! You have me curious now. He does have cereal with milk for breakfast and often after school, so we are going to give it a try. I will try ANYTHING at this point!
It was probably two years ago (when he was 8) we did the sleep alarm. And yes, it attaches to the underwear then the alarm attached to his shirt by his ear. We tried it for several nights and he never even rolled over when it went off. The other kids, DH, and I all pretty much hit the ceiling when it went off, and he just kept on sleeping. We probably should try it again but I need to work up to it mentally. Obnoxious doesn't even begin to cover it! ![]()

And if all else fails, you could try these drops. We actually started these drops about 5 days before we started the alarm, and then continued the drops for about a week afterwards. They may have helped. Although since DD still wets at night - just wakes up and goes to the bathroom versus sleeping through it - I believe it was the alarm that helped her.

Update!! Well, wouldn't you know, last night she asked to wear to wear panties to bed. So after dinner, no drinks, potty right before bedtime, sleeping potty when I went to bed (she didn't go then, though). left the night light on the in the bathroom, she chooeses new panties to sleep in (alright I figured) and at 4:20 am I hear the toilet flush and hear her run back to her room! She comes into my room around 6:30 am screaming that she didn't go potty in the bed! "Now I can wear panties to bed!"
Well, well, well, is all I can say! We will see how tonight goes! My baby girl IS becoming a big girl !!!!!
