Question Way OT ~ Second Grade Science Project

Help!

DD has to do a science fair project...it has to be something that she can demonstrate in front of her class and give a simple oral report on. I need to supply the idea to her teacher tomorrow...yikes! With DS's new DX and recent doctor's appointments...this bad mommy overlooked how soon this was due (came home on Monday night.)

Ideas they gave are:
~Which antacid dissolves the fastest?
~Which brand of paper towel absorbs the most water?
~How does the surface affect how far a marble will roll?
~Which orange will produce the most juice?

She needs to practice it at least four times at home as well.

THANKS!!!

My second grade class in my school (im a teacher) just did a report on how soap works for the science fair and bar soap vs dish soap etc. bascially you can probably get most info off the net, but soaps molecules attach to certain dirt molecule and soap does not stick to surface and so when rinsed the soap takes the dirt with it hope that idea helps in some way heres a good starting off point How Does Soap Clean - Chemistry of Soap and Saponification

You can try googling "science projects for second grade". I got tons of results that all indicate that they can be done with common household objects.

you could have her observe three bouquets of flowers and see which stay fresh the longest: the kind with an aspirin addded to the water, the kind with nothing added, or the kind with the little packet of plant food added.

she can take photos of the changes and then display the three bouquets.

you'd need a good 10 days between now and the due date tho.

good luck. the "fun" has just begun!

My son in K won for one called "Are washable markers really washable?" What we did was we bought four brands of washable markers. First we took a plain white undershirt and used permanant marker to divide the front into four squares. Then in each square we wrote one brand name in permanant marker. Then we made marks with each color in the box in that square. Then we took photos (every step of the way we took photos) and then we washed it, photographed it and washed it again and photographed it again with a little sign saying second wash. Then we wrote on his hands and his brothers hands. One hand for each brand, again every color and then they washed thier hands and we took photos again. (I did not use permanant marker on thier hands, but put a rubber band around thier wrists that I wrote the brand on) Anyway, he won first place and it took one afternoon. He didn't have to do an oral thing though, just a board.

ohhh! I love the washable markers one! I will have to remember that!

I was thinking along the lines of "Sink or Float"? You know, wood item vs metal item vs plastic item.

So? What did she choose? Those of us with first graders want to know!

See how much we learn here?

Thanks all...I should have mentioned that because the kids school is a science and technology magnet...we have already done 15 science projects at home ...so we have done most of the above. However...I found a great one...'Dancing Raisins' hopefully we get approved. We had to list a 'different' so we will either use other objects or other liquids. Here it is for future reference:

------------------------------------------------------------------

Dancing Raisins

These little guys can groove!
Materials Needed
  • tall clear glass
  • raisins
  • club soda that has a lot of bubbles (This won't work if the club soda is flat.)
Instructions
  1. First, pour the club soda in the glass.
  2. Next, drop in half of a raisin.
  3. Wait at least 20 to 30 seconds and watch what happens to the raisin. (The raisin should rise and fall.)
  4. The reason why the raisin floats to the top is because the bubbles stick to the sides of the raisin and make the raisin more buoyant. Buoyant means that something floats more easily. The bubbles make the raisin float the way a life jacket makes a person float.
Now, start to experiment. Think of a question that you'd like to answer. Like, "Can I get something that is heavier than a popcorn kernel to float using bubbles? Will a walnut or a super ball float?" Make a prediction, test it out, and share your results.
