UGH...Poor DS. Every once in a while he complains of leg pains...which we assumed until now were growing pains. A couple of months ago...he woke up with a swollen knee...again we really didn't worry because he is a 5 year old, active little boy...and it went away after a couple of days. Today he woke with with a swollen knee again and enough pain to want medication (Tylenol)..plus he was limping a bit.
He had his feeding therapy this morning and the FT had one of the PT's look at his knee...she noticed that it was warmer than the other knee and said we should get it looked at. So DS has a Dr's appointment at 8:05 am tomorrow...but the PT mentioned it could be something more serious but is probably an infection of some sort or arthritis or...yikes?! Anyone ever have this happen? I have never prayed and hoped so hard that it is 'just' an infection. I just can't keep my mind from going where I don't want it to go. This poor kid just can't catch a break. Thanks.

Spiderman kept complaining of leg pains and I thought "growing pains". Then he got a sore throat and swollen tonsils. I thought "strep" and off we went to the pediatrician. Turned out to be a "Staph infection" which explained the leg pains and the ear infection and the tonsils. Also found out that the so-called "flu" that I was contending with was also Staph -- I probably caught it from him. He and I have both been on antibiotics since mid-January and are still testing positive. Go to the doctor ASAP.

my nephew has arthritis in his knees. I know he was in alot of pain (with swelling) for awhile. The ped. thought it was just growing pains for awhile until finally deciding to look into it further. Now he takes a once a day med. and has very little problems with it. Of course baseball season seems to to the worst for him. He can still play, he just has to sit out for the end of the game once in awhile. If you have any questions you can PM me if you like. Anything I don't know I can ask my sister.

Thanks all...after <stupidly> googling his symptoms...I am concerned about JRA/arthritis...and mentioned it to DH. Well, it seems the PT had a much more in depth conversation with DH than he let on...and arthritis was talked about. <sigh> Regardless of what it is...hopefully we will begin addressing it at tomorrow's appointment.

I know of a couple of kids who have had an infection in the knee and one was a staph infection like mamas mentioned.
Sure hope he is feeling okay and that whatever it is...is easily treatable! HUGS to you both!!!

Is it red? And shiny?
We have gout in our family - pretty severly. It is uncommen in women - 2 women in my family have it. It is uncommen in children - I had it at young age. Not as young as your little guy thouggh. MY dad's is the worst. Toes, knees, fingers, elbows, spine. I've only had it in my toes and occassionally fingers. My aunt - feet and knees. My uncle feet and hands. I'll be praying that it is something minor and treatable. |

Say a prayer please...if so inclined.
The doctor was sufficiently concerned (would not say why) to 'call in a favor' and get DS an appointment this afternoon with a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Joe DiMaggio's Children's Hospital (at 2:30.) Per the bloodwork...no sign of infection. CRAP! To say I am a nervous wreck in an understatement. Thanks for the thoughts! Karen |
