Where were you when you got the call?
The recent post from waitingformybaby and the reply from votemom made me think about this - what a great day and memory! I'm sure this is not the first thread of it's kind but always fun!
I'll start! I was in Woodstock, VT, a small picture postcard mountain town, at my niece's horse show, with very little cell service and I finally got a signal and checked messages - THE CALL! I raced around this teeny tiny town(Friday afternoon at 4:30) to find a computer and there was my baby!. The rest, as they say......... |

First time, at home waiting for my SIL and nieces to come over for dinner as DH was at Phillies game with BIL
Second time, at work, got the call a month earlier then we thought. Needless to say, I left work early that day!

This is really interesting to hear where everyone was! I got my call about 7-9 months before I was expecting it! My step-mother had JUST passed away, and I was up to my dad's in a small mountain town in the CA Gold Country.
The day before the funeral, I had taken my dad to get a hair cut and his eye borws trimmed...he he!! As we were getting into the car...my cell phone rang!!! It was weird, becasue it was in the middle of awful snowstroms, and we had come to stay at a hotel in town, my dad lives 30 minutes up the mountain with no cell service. If we had not been in town I would probably have not gotten the message for a few more days!

I was at work. I missed the call because I was in a meeting. I couldn't get them back on the phone right away so I just left and started driving home. I called again from home and finally got the rep who gave me details. That 24 hours waiting for the package to arrive with the details were excruciating!

I was at home in the summertime on 7/11/06 because I worked part-time back then. I remember sitting on my loveseat in my den.
I was very stressed with my agency because we werent getting referrals that we were comfortable with parenting personally. I had started researching agencies that worked with China adoption because I have heard good things about China(now Im glad i didnt switch because I have my child and because China is very stalled). While I was sitting on my loveseat I called my husband to put in a call to my social worker to tell her that we were leaving our agency. About an hour before we were to call her, she gave us a call and found us a child who we felt comfortable with accepting. It took her about 6 mo. but she did it and two weeks later we were on a plane to Moscow. You never know how life works. I dont know for sure if Im a total believer in above but in our prayerbook at temple it says "G-d works in mysterious ways." This time the book certainly seemed correct. Amy K, NJ

where was I?
OMG! I was driving on the freeway to get new cellphones for my husband and I. I answered the call and immediately pulled the car over in the breakdown lane. I knew the call was coming and had my pad of paper, questions and a pen from the glove compartment. So, they told me they had photos and medical if I wanted to come to the agency to pick up the info.
I got hubby and rushed over ... the rest is history!

Amy, I got my call on 7/14/06. You know, I don't even think it was 2 weeks before we were on that plane (Amy and I were on the same plane to Moscow) We flew the following Sat, the 22nd. Whew, what a whirlwind that was, right? And we both got beautiful healthy girls almost exactly the same age! Awesome! |

We did not exactly get "the call", more like we got the video & pix in person! The day we had our interview with our (outstanding) agency and to turn in our completed dossier (with our agency you personally hand it in and have your interview). At the end of the interview with the agency director and our case worker the director left the room and came back about 10 minutes later (we had thought we were done and just sitting and making conversation with our case worker). She said that after talking with us and looking at our request (boy, age 12 months to 24 months at bring home) she thought we might be interested in looking at a video (with pictures) of a child that just came off the data base and was 16 months old. She had just returned from Russia (she goes 3-4 times a year and personally has interaction with each child she refers) and had taken the video to bring back to the states for a referral. She adored this child and had alot of info on him (meds, history). We jumped at the chance (our agency always matched children with the family after seeing them in person and finding the personality traits and family dynamics, no waiting in line for a referral, they did not do the line thing). So we received our referral the day we turned in our dossier (07/06/04) and he was beautiful, healthy and even then on the video you could see how advanced he was developmentally, a few weeks later we were on trip one. Four weeks after trip 1 we were home with him at 18 months old. Our entire adoption took 6 months and 2 days from sign on with agency to bring home, with the timing of everything (her last trip to Russia and the video being just 2 weeks before our interview date and him just coming off the data base within that month) we know that this was our child. I was his mom the second I saw the video!

Okay, I love hearing everyone's story. I really can't do mine justice with just one line. So bear with me as I tell it.
I had called my agency on Thursday, the day before my 40th birthday, just to check in and ask if there was any glimmer of hope that I'd get my referral soon. My rep laughed and asked me to be patient...told me it would be several more weeks and reminded me that I had not been waiting that long. The following Monday, I had a business trip to Chicago (where it so happens that my family lives). I fell asleep on the flight and woke abruptly with one thought in my head: I was going to get "the call" that day. I spend the rest of that flight chastising myself and reminding myself what my agency rep had told me only 4 days earlier. When I got to my office and was settling in to lunch at my desk, my cell phone rang with "the call". Very, very freaky and the rest is history. I agree with Christina...waiting 24 hours for that package was excruciating. Also, I had previously decided not to tell my family about any referrals until I had officially accepted and felt comfortable that things wouldn't fall through. That plan went right out the window since I was staying with them. My sister watched the video and told me that as far as she was concerned, that child in the video was her nephew and I had better go and bring him home. |

I had gone out of town for one night for work. At the last minute I grabbed my computer to keep me entertained in the hotel. A bunch of other families using my agency - but a different region all got "the call" that day. I sent an email to my agency asking for an udpate on my case.
The next day I was walking out of a gas station/Wendy's combo thinking about what to get for lunch (obviously I didn't want Wendy's!!). My cell rang and it was my agency - I thought she was calling to answer my email questions in person. The last thing from my mind was that I had a referral too!! I grabbed my laptop and went across the street to Boston Market to eat and see my referral!! I think the staff there thought I was NUTS! |

I love these stories! I was with my sister also, and she said almost the same thing when she saw the picture "oh, I really think this is the one - she is my niece, go get her and bring her home"! |

I was off work that day, sitting at home, probably on the computer doing what research I could concerning Russian adoption. The called ID told me who it was before I said hello. The agency told me that they had a child, and would be sending the medical info and pictures overnight.
The only phone call better than that one was calling my wife at work to tell he we got a referral. |
