Thank you everybody. We went to a place called Our Lady of the Snow...it is a place where there are thousands and thousands of lights set up. It is beautiful. Well in another part they have donkey and camel rides....so the kids love that too. Inside is a childrens part and there is a puppet show and craft things the kids can do. They can also dress up like angels.

I will give it a shot, but the significance is different from person to person. In the Bible angels were messengers. In the Christmas story in particular they are used several times. The first to announce to a young unmarried (though engaged) girl that she was going to have a baby, even though she was a virgin. The next time to convince her fiance to marry her anyway, and tell him she was not making the story up. Then there were the angles who went and told the shepherds that the baby had been born and that it was a very special child sent by God and was indeed God come in human form. There are many otehr instances in the Bible where Angles come and deliver messages. Of course if I remember correctly the ones in the Bible tend to be male.
Culturally they have taken on other meanings that may or may not have much Biblical basis. Some people beleive that each person has a gardian angel that watches over them, other's beleive that angels are what people become after they die. For many people angels symbolize goodness, purity and innocence. That is why parents will sometimes call a child an "angel", or people will call someone who often goes out of thier way to help others an "angel". To others it's just a cute costume to dress kids in. Some people are not sure what they beleive. Anyway, I had not answered at first because I don't know the OP's beleifs. As you can see there is no one answer to the question. Angels are not just part of Christianity, but also Judaism and Muslim religions, though I don't think they are as significant. The very first part of the Bible is beleived by all three religions. They actually started out as one religion. The first split occurred when a man named Abraham had two sons. One by his wifes maid and then later one by his wife. His wife got jealous and had the maid and her son kicked out. (though the whole thing with the maid was her idea) and so the two sons separated and the son of the maid's progeny became the Muslim's and the other son's became the Jews. Christians separated much later over the beleif of who and what Jesus was and what he meant to the religion. Of course then the Christians have splintered into hundreds of denominations since then. (usually over disagreements).
Anyway, history lesson over for today. Feel free to PM me or whatever if you have more questions. I will try to answer, though I am not an expert on much of anything.

I appreciate your time and interest Momraine. You say you dont know a lot about history or religion but you certainly are more up on it than I am. Thanks again and I hope your holidays are wonderful.
