Crossed Eyes/Strabismus questions

Wow! It's been a long time since I have visited this forum. We adopted our son from Vsevolozhsk in June 2003. He has truly been a blessing for us.

Anyway, he has strabismus in both eyes. It's not really that noticeable. The opthamologist has recommended eye muscle surgery. Has anyone gone through this procedure with their children? How did it go?

Andrew is in 1st grade and has had some issues learning to read. The teacher says that he holds his book kind of strangely. I was wondering if this procedure would help.

Any advice or suggestions.....

Thanks.
Polly

Our daughter had the surgery at the age of two. The procedure took about an hour. She cried for about 30 minutes after waking up. She then played for the rest of day, with no problems. She has had no complications since the surgery. She now wears glasses, but the doctor said it was not related to the strabismus. We have regular checkups and so far the eye muscles are doing great.

DD just had the surgery in July. It went VERY smoothly. It did solve the straying of her eyes (both outward and inward) - it does not solve the shaking in her eyes. She also still wears glasses, due to her actual eyesight. But, as far as surgery goes - it was great. The biggest problem for us was that she couldn't swim for a few weeks!

good!

Thanks for the responses.....It's nice to hear that the surgery's have gone well.

The doctor told us that no physical activity for 10 days. I guess he hasn't met my 6 year old son! There's not a lot of downtime........

Hi votemom!

Where there any other options that may correct the eyes such as glasses or using a patch on the weak eye. Good luck with everything.

Our son has been wearing glasses for his strabismus for 6 months now. His eyesight has improved by 50% so far, but if in the next 6 months it doesn't improve anymore the Dr. mentioned one of two options. Either bifocals or the surgary. So far we are anticipating one of the two to happen, because the longer he wears his current glasses the worse his eyes seem to be (but I'm not a Dr. either). So we'll see what happens.

Polly, it's been a while since I've been on, too...but I saw your question and thought I'd respond.

My DS had the surgery at the age of 4, and will likely need it a second time. (Apparently almost 50% of patients will need a second surgery to "fine tune" the first.) He's 8 now, and in 2nd grade.

The actual surgery was remarkably quick. Once he woke up, he was back to normal activity very quickly. His eyes looked awful, but he seemed to feel fine. I would clarify what your doctor means by "no physical activity." I think we might have had a swimming restriction, but normal play/activity was fine.

My son has several eye issues, and the surgery just helps one of them, so he still wears glasses (bifocals) all the time... and a patch for several hours a day.
