We had our ten days waived a little over a year ago in St. Petersburg. At first I was told to not even ask. When our court proceedings went into day two, I was told AS I was walking into the court room to come up with three ideas. I explained that my grandfather was at home dying. This was not a lie at the time although I am more than happy to report that he pulled through and is getting to know his great grandson! I also said that due to his speech delay, I wanted to get him into school quickly. It's hard to believe it, but we can't remember the third reason right now. It might have been to treat a semi-contageous skin condition. It will probably keep me up at night trying to remember. Our judge was SUPER nice and we think she may have felt bad that our paperwork wasn't in order and we had to come back a second day. I always wonder if she believed me about the grandpa story, but I did start crying as I told her.
Best of luck and remeber it's allll worth it in the end!!! |

We had our 10 day waiting period waived in November 2006. We knew going in that the judge in our region often, in fact almost always, waived the waiting period. Our waiting period was waived, but the reason given was a Hepatitis A outbreak in the city the orphanage was located in. the outbreak was so bad, nobody in the city was supposed to be drinking the water.

We had ours waived back in 2004 but that was pretty much the norm in St. Petes at the time. I hear its about 50/50 now in St. Petes and have friends that had theirs waived earlier this year. Most people are expecting to deal with the 10 days I believe and if it is waived consider it a bonus!

Hi, just a quick note to say ours was not waived and we thought that would just be the worst thing ever; however, we used those days (weekends didn't count so it was actually more) to study his city, see all the sights, see how the people lived, shopped for groceries, ate what they ate, went to flea markets, tourist attractions, historical sites (he's from Pskov)....we are not rich so we walked everywhere, but basically, we "saw" the city. We lived the Russian life. We now have wonderful first hand experiences to share with Alex when he is older and looking back, we wouldn't trade that opportunity for a "waive". We had a 14 year old daughter at home which was the hardest part about the ten days but being able to communicate with her from a local computer room made it bearable. By the way, we were only allowed to visit Alex once during our waiting period which was very hard on us knowing we were so close to him. Rex

Our agency here in the States encouraged us to try, but the staff in region in Russia wouldn't even allow us to ask as they said the judge would just get really, really angry. We were told that in our region, unless there is an IMMEDIATE (life or death) need for medical care/surgery in the US, the 10 days will not be waived. They said it's been that way for the past 1 year. I think it really all depends on the region and the health of your child(ren). Oh, and we brought a letter (JIC) from our IA Dr. encouraging the judge to waive the 10 days. She didn't, but we didn't even try...just a thought for you.
