I dont think there should be any catogories either... here is the letter I sent earlier....

I am writing to you because I am so offended by you putting adoptive mothers into the "non mom" category.

Adoptive mothers are just as much a REAL mother as any other mom. "giving birth" does not define motherhood. ANYONE can "reproduce" but it takes a special person to be a mother.

I cant BELIEVE you would put my mom, into a "non mom category" My "non mom" raised me since I was an infant, stayed home to raise me all through school, led my girl scout troop, picked me up when I fell, took me shopping for my prom dress, and my "non" father walked me down the isle on my wedding day. They are my parents and my family and EVERYTHING I know and have and for your company to try and discredit them as" being "non" parents is so disrespectful, and offensive, NOT TO MENTION destructive to the publics view of adoption and families. You are giving adoptive mothers no more credit, than if they were elected "team mom" for the little league, and had to bring snack once a week. An Adoptive parent IS your real parent, they are not just someone "playing a role"

I believe you have a moral responsibility to fairly and accurately represent all types of families and mothers, not just the "real" ones that fall into your narrow view of vagina birth "motherhood"

All I have to say now is I am disappointed and hurt to realize that you would blatantly disrespect such a large and growing number of the population.

I'm just really befuddled by the categories in general after thinking about it some more. I mean, on some level we are all these things, no? We wear many hats and does it matter how we wear them? We all do the "soccer mom" persona even if not soccer specifically. We all work, whether it's at home or not.

Really...the more I think about it, the more it just seems to put women in competition which let's face it, we do just fine on that ourselves without help. lol!

We are all moms, have hats, will travel. Love our kids. End of story.

Crick,

You said what I wanted to say, but did not have to post earlier!!!!

And if you think about it even harder you could come up with thousands of categories!!!

Have all of you who have written in to NBC watched this program? Have you all watched NBC? I only faithfully watch ABC and that is it as far as public television goes. Should I be sending in a letter as I"m not a viewer or potential viewer(though I think the issue is insane!). I also laughed at your first posting Crick.

Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms!!!!!
How many categories do you fit into?? How stupid, do these people have Moms, real or not ;-).......The COE categoriy is weird, too....every Mom were a dozens hats!
Single mom, Working mom, adoptive mom, COE mom....least us not forget, oh! Non-Mom!!! It's even offensive to the people they were tyring to include like single dads or grandparents.
Hey! Could I win all the of categories???? hehe!!

I think they got the point. Since I am in the public media business, I can pretty much guarantee some underling was assigned to come up with this stuff for someone else who 'was too busy' and neither of them had the first moment's experience with adoption. I am sure they were bombarded with corrective coorrespondence - starting, probably, with Marie Osmond herself. Media companies will do just about anything if their revenue base gets threatened. Nice work here, parents.

This is beyond sad and it makes me very angry. While I have never seen the show, it breaks my heart to even think that they would pigeon-hole adoptive moms into a lesser category than any other mom. If anything, I think adoptive moms go above-and-beyond to be the best moms out there. Keep your heads high Moms...one day hopefully the public's perception of adoption and adopted families won't be so jaded.

Well, someone got the message because it is no longer listed on teh website! there is no non-mom mom in teh category and there is adopted mom. it saddens me. I am not a PC person per-say but, labeling a person a non-mom because they havn't given birth is wrong. if a grandparent is raising a grandchild or a single father is raising a child. They are not non-mom. They are parents; parenting a child who needs them. It happens everyday everywhere.

I sent this in. Better late than not at all.

In part.........

Maybe you can learn something from this ad from Pearle Vision. They didn't categorize me as you did; Non-Mom Mom role.

Only later did someone change the title on your Mother's Program from Non-Mom Mom Role to Adoptive Mom. However, once a viewer clicked on the link, the Non-Mom Mom Role showed on the Gold Heart.

Whomever put your show together on Mother's, didn't do their homework and NBC needed no help in looking the part on national TV. Additional Adoption Educational Resources can be found at local bookstores, parent forums, etc. May I also suggest a subscription to Adoptive Family Magazine? Discovery Channel runs a program titled Adoption Stories. Did you know there is a National Adoption Awareness Month?

You've insulted and offended more Mother's around the World than you'll ever know or maybe care. A public apology might right a wrong........

However Motherhood comes to you, it is a miracle!
It doesn't matter how you became a Family. It matters that you are a Family.

I haven't been on the boards in a while before today.

I found out on Sat. about the categories.

I wrote letters to the Today Show, Marie Osmond, and Teleflorist.

I was disappointed in their responses because they all missed the point.

Mom's who have adopted should not have been in a separate category, PERIOD, changing the name makes no difference, although non moms was very offensive.

I understand that they wanted to honor grandparents that are raising children, foster parents and step parents, but I do not believe adopting should have been separate at all. How ignorant.

Funny story though........on mother's day my son said, mom I was going to enter you in this contest but I didn't send it in on time, but here is what I wrote.

When I looked down to see what contest it was it was the one we are discussing..........I said, I'm so glad you didn't because I would have had to have been in a separate category for you/your brother and then for you sister.
