Snip, snip

Funny story from last night...
We have discussed circumcision in our house. Obviously, two boys/men have pee-pees that look different than C's. Not that we walk around nude - but it's come up from time to time. The ped had discussed the options when we first returned home. To that end, we always told Cole that while we had feelings on the topic, it was ultimately his decision. It's only come up a few times...it was said that the sooner the better if he decided to do it and DH told him this summer would be the last time that we would support it (we just don't want him TOO old). So, there was never pressure or a real opinionated view. Anyway, last night in the car while we were discussing a school incident - C butts in and says "I've decided to have my penis cut off". My DH nearly wrecked the car. We were all just shocked. I turned and said "what do you mean?" - he answered, "you know take off that extra skin".

Too darn funny the way he put it. Then when we got home the kids are playing in the backyard and Delaney YELLS (with neighbors out all around us)...I bet your penis is going to swell up and look really huge after the doctor cuts it off.

Dear lord...
No flames please on the decision - it's a personal one!

I just have to chime in...My DS who is 5 was "snipped snipped" on Thursday. Not his decision, but we really had no choice given the tightness and frequent infections.

We also have a 7 yo DD who was fascinated by all of this. We tried to prepare our son ...(You'll go to the hospital, they will make you breath in a mask that will make you fall asleep. They will fix your penis and then you will wake up. We'll give you good medicine if you are in any pain. etc)...

Once we got home from the hospital, after a VERY long day, my son looked at me and said, "You forgot to tell me about the cutting part." Boy, didn't I feel like a schmuck...I thought "fix your penis" was more age appropriate, but he apparently wanted the details. Thankfully, he did tell his sister that the worse part was the throwing up which happened about 2-3 times on the way home.

My DD, of course, got part of the story correct. She went to school and told her first grade teacher that "My brother has to go to the dentist who is going to fix his privates. I guess some boys just have to get them cut off!" Needless to say, I had an interesting talk with the teacher, and I promise you we didn't have this done at the dentists!!

Choices

I adopted a 10 year old boy last year, and he is not circumsized. We have a Russian pediatrician and I had him tell Michael in Russian how VERY important it is to keep Mr. Happy clean. [We decided to call it Mr. Happy because my 74 year old Mother who lives with us couldn't deal with the word "penis."]

I don't know how well he's doing with keeping it clean, but I had a final discussion with him the other day about circumscision, and offered him the option. I tried to explain it very clinically but carefully. He said NO. What a surprise! So be it.

I can imagine no matter how much you prepare a child, the thought it very scary. Your post made me laugh, though, and I needed that!

Isnt it crazy how you forget some things just arnt understood? Slightly off topic but my little cousin had begged to have her ears peirced and he parents finally caved... they took her in and after the first ear she stormed out furiouse that no one had told her (at age 5) that you "have to cut your ears!" to have the earrings put in.

Back on topic... I hadnt even thought about the C thing. Is it standard for russian boys not to have it done?

Kelly ~ Too cute about your cousin's ear piercings. No, I do not believe that any Russian boys have this done...in fact, as far as I'm aware, most of the boys/men all across Europe do not practice this.

Have a nice day!

In Russia, it's seen as a Jewish thing, not a health/cleanliness issue. What an interesting discussion to begin at the dinner table...somehow we got on the subject with our Russian "family" (the folks we live with in Russia), and they were mortified to realize that in the USA people have the option, and many choose to have it done...probably the hardest question I've ever had to answer in Russian was "So why do Americans cut their kids even if they're not Jewish?" ...well...

I can't imagine that talk with your Russian hosts. Too funny! I'm sure they think we are monsters for doing that to unsuspecting kids!

TOO FUNNY! We have both versions at our house and each prefers their own. And the blurt outs - oh my. At Lacrosse practice last week our 6YO blurts out - Mom, I don't have my penis cup! from half-way across the field. The coaches just howled, but at least we aren't getting a request for amputation! :-) You have to write that one down before it slips away. Good luck with the process.
