Those in NJ re: readoption

I had my second pp visit last night and I asked the social worker about either just getting her a US birth certificate or actually doing the re-adoption. What did you do? I'm curious as to what it means to re-adopt here, or is just getting the birth certificate enough. She's looking into getting me more information, but I figured you guys on the forums know a lot also.

Thanks,

I decided to just get the Birth Certificate since the main reason I was going to do the re-adoption was to get the Birth Certificate & it was a lot less complex & less expensive

Hi Cathy and Barbara! Our little guy has been home about 9 months and I was wondering the same thing. We would like to get him a US birth certificate and we live in NJ. We thought we had to go through the whole re-adoption process in order to get this. Can you tell me how you go about getting a US birth certificate? I've looked on the State of NJ website and didn't do very well at getting the information I needed.

Thanks very much for your help!

Here is the link
How to place an adoption on file with the New Jersey (NJ) Office of Vital Statistics

Also if you do a search on NJ birth certificates we had some postings a few months ago. Email me if you need any help.

Hi. I decided to do the readoption rather than getting the birth certificate after I talked to the surrogate's office at the county clerk's office. He said that if I/she moves and loses any paperwork if we just get the birth certificate, it might be harder to get a new one. With readoption, they are automatically registered in the county so there will always be a record. I had him e-mail me the paperwork and I will be filing them out and submitting them. Unfortunately, I will need to get fingerprinted again, since mine expired. I asked about doing it myself and he said most people do, you don't need a lawyer. PM me and I can send you the e-mail he sent me, it's from Somerset County.

Readoption creates a second court of record and permits you to obtain a NJ Birth Certificate. (location of birth still says Russia). If you obtain a Certificate of Foreign Birth, - it is a record that is usable, for school, sports etc and works like a birth certificate.

The advantages of the re-adoption is to minimize any potential risks (which are extremely minimal to begin with) of inheritance rights issues and any potential contest of the adoption. There are some schools of thoughts that it can help in case of future citizenship issues tying to potential military service, as well.
