Home Study Questions

I have my home study scheduled for 11/9. I live in Texas. Do they look ath the house more or is it more about questions. I have a friend who adopted through the state so hers was a different senerio. She said that she had a seperate inspection of her house and that her home study was mostly an interview. I have not heard about any kind of inspection from my agency.

Our social worker made it really clear that obvious safety hazards were a no-no, but she couldn't have cared less about the dust bunnies. Good thing - we have them a'plenty.

That sounds similiar to ours. We had a few hours of questions, and the second visit she looked over our house. We had a checklist of things that had to be done for our house and we made sure we had those things done. She looked things over and that was it. HTH!

We are also in Texas. We had a quick walk through of the house, she was looking for smoke alarms and obvious safety issues. We did not even have the room ready for the new kid.
It was more about the interviews.

Beth, Where do you live? -A lot depends on who is doing the HS. Different agencies and different SWs have slightly different routines. In general, they will do a quick walk through (neither of mine looked in closets, drawers, or even the refrigerator). They may want to see the back yard and/or the garage. Primarily they are looking at space and safety issues. They are looking for fire safety equipment, poisons out of reach, any "babyproofing" such as outlet plugs, and general space, especially the adequacy of the child's room for sleep and play etc. They look for general cleanliness and the absense of "pests".

Most of the HS involves an interview. -Plan a quiet comfortable spot where you can sit and the SW will have a place to write her notes. Make a pot of coffee or tea, and relax! She will not usually ask anything you have not considered or discussed already.

Our interview was detailed and pretty long. Our SW met with us separately and together, she also met with all of our kids, separately (they were 10, 12 and 16 at the time)

Here were some of the questions for us:
our upbringing, relationship with parents - then and now, relationship with siblings.
Why we wanted to adopt, questions about discipline
Questions about plans for our child - expectations, schooling, etc.
