Starting to talk about it
James is finally starting to talk about "Roosha". If I ask him something, he'll respond. He has yet to volunteer anything, so I'm really just easing him into the whole idea of talking about it.
I know he misses some of his care givers. He does not seem to have any attachment at all to the kids that were in his "group". He will and does talk about "Mama Alyssa" and while I love that he's feeling comfortable enough to talk about her, I hate that they named themselves "mama anything". Anyway, home 5 months and answering questions now. Before he'd just play dumb and wouldn't answer. He refuses to speak in Russian still, seems to think there's no such language. Not sure if it's developmental or just emotional to not want to acknowledge it. Anyway, he's doing well, I think......we're so lucky.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that kids have to drop an old language temporarily when learning a new one, unless they are speaking it at home all the time. My son is already forgetting his Polish and it makes me kind of sad, but I have lots of videos and stuff for him, and when he is ready I will have him listen to them and hopefully it will come back.

I wish Julia c/h kept her Russian. Might be handy later in life. But it just wasn't possible. There was no one with whom she could have conversed when she came home. San Antonio is not famous for its Russian community.
She started talking about Russia at her five-months-home mark, too. Some of it good - people she missed. Some of it bad. I listen more than I comment. Becky The Woodworth Family in Beautiful San Antonio TX |
