USAToday Article: Russia Curtails American Adoptions

The article appeared today. I wonder if this is in reference to the current accreditation delays or does it mean no agencies will be accredited? Has anyone heard?

The last officially accredidated agencies had their accredidation's expire today. No agency is currently accredited. Some adoptions continue as independents in some regions.

This was pretty much anticipated and expected for the most part. This is an issue that has been building up for quite some time unfortunately.

Sue, My take is that it reflects the current situation, not anything new... I did find some of the statistics interesting...

I didn't make too much of this as it was mostly information we already knew. I believe that the number of adoptions each year will continue to drop and that fewer agencies will work with Russia as time goes on. And then, just like that things can turn around again when baby homes are filled and resources are limited and tourism is effected. In a small region 100 adoptions in a year can make a big difference economically.

I don't believe the Russian people are suddenly going to change their view on adoption and welcome these children into their homes. So there will be a need.

GCS, not to sound grim or Play Devils' Advocate or whatever...
Who knows if things will eventually turn around in Russia? For eg. Belarus closed its doors and so did Romania. There are still plenty of orphans in those countries to be adopted, but although there could be economic incentives, these countries still choose not to be any longer in the intl. adoption program.
I think we'll just all have to see how all plays out in the end.

We were on the verge of making our 2nd trip and bringing the kids home when our agency lost its accreditation. We are so far into the process, of course we have no choice but to wait this out until we get some solid news. However if I were in the beginning phases or just considering Russian adoptions, this is the sort of news in which I might feel more comfortable reconsidering my decision to adopt from Russia.

A co-worker set the paper on my desk yesterday. I read it today and I felt a little deflated. My agency was one of the last few accredited ones out there and we are trying to save to adopt again.

Oh well, what can you do??
