Oh Cathy..I am so sorry you have been going through so much! I have been out of town, but I see these folks have been taking great care of you...as they always do for me!

I am an RN, and worked for years in a children's hospital...yes it is true as many have posted that some of these kiddos do very well. But from my experience, I think the stats you have found are correct...with any kiddo it can be a gamble, but with a child whose birthmom was a known IV drug user..that is definitely a risk-and with being a single mom, I think you made a very wise choice in turning this referral down.

It is so sad that these kids don't get much of a chance as it is, and then to have to face such assults even in the womb-but remember, as you may not be equipped to save this child, there will be another whose life will be forever altered (in a wonderful way) by your when he/she is brought into your life!!

When we lost our referral at the MOE...(when they pulled out pictures of a different child that we came to see, I was like..NO NO NO! I have her picture RIGHT HERE! THAT IS NOT HER!!!!!!)...we were offered a very sick child that we turned down right away (classic FAS)..then we were told...."this is the last young girl available"....Oh I just KNEW they were trying to force us to take a really ill child...the situation felt so hopeless..and then we met our sweet Hannah. We will never forget that little girl Anzela..she was not meant to be our child but she was the child that brought Hannah and us together...we will never forget her.

As a fellow single mom getting ready to get child #2 I am very very sympathetic. I am SO sorry this happened! I suggest you demand another referral. You traveled halfway around the world and you deserve to find a child!!

Just read your thread this afternoon. I'm so sorry for what you are going through. We also had to turn down the first child offerred to us in our region. We did meet her first, but I knew within the first few moments of meeting her that she was not our child. They offerred us a second child the next day, who is our daughter now.
