We are getting ready to file our taxes. For thoses of you that have already filed, did you claim everything associated with you adoption. Like postage, $$ spent for notary ect. If not, what did you claim. PM me if you have any information that will help.
Thanks.

Yes you can claim any expenses associated with the adoption including gas/mileage costs. With international adoption the fees alone exceed the tax credit of $10,960 so claiming postage is really not necessary.
I hope this helps!

Ditto to what Crispex said - I think we just claimed enough to get the tax credit which I just showed the biggest bill invoiced by the agency....I wish we got credit for the other stuff!

1. Remember that you don't need to submit any receipts when you file for the tax credit. The receipts will be needed only if you are audited. And since the IRS knows that international adoption tends to cost at least $20K and usually more, it rarely audits specifically on tax credit issues.
2. Remember that your adoption cost way more than the maximum amount you can claim as qualifying adoption expenses. As long as you keep enough receipts to cover up to roughly $11,000 in expenses, you will be fine. In most cases, if you save the receipts for big things like your homestudy, USCIS clearance, placement agency, airplane flights, hotels, etc., you will be way over that amount. Save other receipts, such as what you spent for postage, Fedex, phone calls, tips, meals, etc., only if you feel compulsive or are accustomed to keeping meticulous records of every expense you make. Employer Benefits
Remember that if your employer benefits reimbursed you for any of your expenses you need to include enough on your return to cover the tax credit plus the reimbursement. We covered our reported expenses pretty close to the real cost, may be a few hundred less, so that when they look at changing the law they will have the numbers to back up raising the amount of the credit.
