Circumcision ques.. he wont walk? Pain?

Did your toddlers have so much pain that they wouldn't walk around. He was moving around when we got home right away, but after nap... just sitting and whining if he moves at all.

He's 21 months by the way.

Thanks for any advice.

How long has it been since the procedure was done? I know that the OR gives an IV pain med that tends to last for a good part of the day.. so often times, the pain right after surgery is diminished. But when that wears off, the full brunt of the pain comes on. Be sure you keep him on pain meds every 4 hours, around the clock, for the 1st few days.. wake him up from sleep to give him the meds. It is likely that his meds wore off during his nap, so the pain notched up. Treat the pain before he hurts, not during.

Are you placing a telfa pad over his circumcision that has vaseline on it - or some sort of antibiotic ointment to keep his diaper/underware from rubbing and sticking to the stitches? The incision and stitches will ooze - then dry and stick - remember to keep it well lubricated.

Did his Doctor give some sort of oral RX medicine for pain relief such as Tylenol with Codiene? That RX gave DS relief for the first 2 days after surgery.

Last month my son had circum and other procedures down there and he was pretty good the following day. I was amazed. His surgery was 1 1/2 hours and I was expecting the worse.

I did give him the tylenol with codeine just in case so he didn't have pain, but by the 2nd day I only gave it to him once. He was fine!! I would check with the dr. and just let him know that you feel like there is discomfort.

We had the experience.

The first day Adam was up and about with no problem. They had put a pain blocker at the base of his spine during the procedure, but the next day when it had worn off he was in discomfort. We just gave him tynenol with codeine for that day.

We had our first post surgical visit last week and things are healing well. We have to go back again on Jan 2 for another follow up.

Austin had the proceedure at 13 months. He was quite the little trooper and never showed any signs that he was in pain. A little groggy the day of the surgery and then right back to wide open play.

It is always amazing how tough kids can be.
