Actually, I believe it is illegal for a spouse to own the house outright in his name, at least it is that way in Texas. A spouse cannot buy or sell property without joint signatures. They may have put the NOTE in his name for income purposes and even if that is the case the spouse must sign off on ownership. He could not sell it unless she signs off on it. Additionally, a judge can order the house to be refinanced to a mortgage she could own. However, the most likely event would be to sell it and split the proceeds.

Amy, I think that's the way it is pretty much everywhere these days. Not really illegal, but there's something called a quit claim deed that she would have to have signed saying he has sole ownership of the home. Even if that were the case, I believe a judge would side with her and void the qcd due to the circumstances.

San Francisco Bay Area has many resources. San Francisco has always been open to diversity of all kinds I know there is a thriving Russian community there and in Walnut Creek, Ca.

Annabelle, Another option: Houston has both a sizeable Russian community, and a number of Universities. The employment market is very strong and the oil and gas and medical fields are particularly robust. (Many of the energy companies are now doing business in the Russian oilfieds, so you would think someone who speaks the language would be an asset...)

An idea for childcare, whether you friend stays in Atlanta or moves... There are many single mother networks out there, and some have babysitting coops. She could exchange babysitting with other women... Just a thought!

You all just keep coming with the good ideas! The Houston possibility sounds very promising -- I think she would like to teach college once she has her PhD, but the idea that companies there have a strong need for Russian speakers right now is food for thought.

If she can just take the test and get citizenship, then she can bring her mom over to help raise baby while she works. (Said Saturday, "I wish I could just find some nice American person who would marry my mom while she's over here, so that she doesn't have to go back. Sigh. But that costs money." I said, "Well, um, honey, that's, like, illegal! It's called a sham marriage, and its fraudulent.") Who do you suppose told her, "That costs money"?

I agree that the home will likely be sold and that a judge will award something to her, particularly after hearing that the sole reason for his wanting to divorce is, "I just want to be single again."

(This is the guy who left his wife and baby alone at the hospital an hour after her emergency C-section, and did not return until 3 days later, when it was time to collect them and bring them home).

Thanks all.

Not sure where you live but there is a huge Russian community in Denver metro. Our family is originally Russian. PM me if I can be of any help or assistance.

Denver metro also publishes some Russian newspapers for the community. If she is interested, I can forward some to her or to you. It has lots of job ads and so on in Russian.
