November is National Adoption Awareness Month

National Adoption Awareness Month, originally created to promote adoption from the US Foster Care System, has been accepted by the general adoption community as a month to celebrate adoption and its role in creating hundreds of thousands of families all over the US.

What do you plan to do this month to raise adoption awareness with those you interact with on a daily basis?

I will be doing a book display and recommended reading list at the library where I work (I do this every year).

On Saturday November 18th I am coordinating a Family Story time at 10:30 in the morning at the library. This is open to everyone. I have 3 guest readers and we will read a variety of adoption story books and then do a craft and have cookies/juice.

If you live within driving distance of Princeton NJ, I would love to have you come to story time -- it is open to all!!!!

We have a loose group of folks, many of whom have been gathering since the kids were in pre-school, and we've added on considerably over the years. We're a very diverse group -- white parents, bi-racial kid; white mom, black dad, black kid; two two-dad sets, one with a Guatamalan kid and a Vietnamese kid, one couple with a little boy and a little girl, both white Americans; white mom, black dad, and black kids; one black dad and bi-racial mom with a black kid; several black couples who've adopted multiple black kids; us (DH of hispanic origin and me white, with DD from Russia); a white couple with a Romanian kid of Gypsy origin; etc. etc. etc.

We get together every two or three months at somebody's house, with lots of food and fun for the kids. All of us talk all the time about ways to bring adoption as a way of family-building to the forefront. Due to holidays, we may not all have time to get together 'til January or February, but we're a pretty dedicated crew, committed to keeping our thing going.

In the spring, DD begins a section in Social Studies on European history, with an emphasis on Russia, and I've already set it up with her former Russian tutor and the teacher for her (tutor) to come in and help teach the class for several days.

Still, feel I'm not doing enough to get the message out....
