I have a question regarding the Employment Letter that is needed for the dossier.
I work from home in Michigan, but my employer is located in Missouri. In which state should the employment letter be notarized/certified/apostilled - Michigan or Missouri?

i would think missouri since the letter has to be written by your employer and signed by your employer. the notarizing/apostilling process validates said signature, so i'm thinking it would have to be missouri.

Well my employer is in NYC, we got it notorized here in PA and appostilled, haven't had a problem at all with it.
But PA and NYC are so close, we call it a "traveling" notary. Same thing happened last adoption in 2004 and we had no problems, just check with your agency though.

It doesn't matter in which state the document is prepared. It should be notarized and apostilled in the same state where it is signed.

Well, I found the answer:
According to the michigan.gov website, documents from other states cannot be certified or authenticated.

I had the same thing. If the letter is signed and notarized in MO, then it has to be notarized in MO.

I had the same issue. The place where I work does not have an HR dept at my location, and only one person in the company can do Employement verifications and that person is at the corporate office in Minnesota (I'm in Kentucky).
I had to have the document signed/notarized in Minnesota, mailed to me for verification that it was done correctly (this took many attempts). Then send it back to Minnesota for certification (they call it "Jurat") and apostilling. So, send it to Missouri for certification/apostilling since it will be signed/notarized there.

Ditto w/ Katie's post above. Since getting an apostille from another state takes SO long, I was able to get a local HR person to sign and notarize a document that said what we needed.
Good luck!

Thank you for the replies. I'll have the letter certified/apostilled in MO. Hopefully, it won't take too long...

Any document must be apostilled in whatever state it is notarized. Doesn't matter where the company is from...just where the notary is registered.
