Please help us!
We have located our son's brother who is in an orphanage in Krasnoyarsk. We have found out a few things about his medical condition but still do not have specifics. They state is is mentally retarded but can answer questions appropriately and can follow instructions. They go on to say he has something wrong with his blood and has to have one injection every day or he may die. In our son's adoption papers the brother is said to have "histiocytosis" (maybe some form of cancer?).
Anyway, the report we jsut got yesterday says he does NOT have cancer but does have to have medical care each day. He is 7 years old. Our son has FAS and I honestly believe that the brother does also and that is why they state he is retarded. I truly believe it is developmental delays due to the FAS and now that he is 7 years old and been institutionalized for 5 years, he had not received all he needed in the way of nurture, stimulation, etc., etc. We are seriously considering adopting him but still need more information so we can make a decision whether or not to go forward. But I was wondering what type of illness would require a seven year old boy to have one injection each day of his life? Other than diabetes. If anyone can shed some light on this I would so appreciate it. Maybe someone is a doctor and can help me out here! BTW...we just got pictures of him and he is beautiful, normal looking little boy! Any input would be welcomed! Thanks Wendi

Hi Wendi.... I do not have any medical answers for you, but have you taken the paperwork to an IA Doctor along with the picture??? An IA doctor would be abe to deciefer what they are trying to say, or can correct the the translation.
It is wonderful that you have located him, and that you are considering bringing him home! Blessings............... ![]()

BTW...we just got pictures of him and he is beautiful, normal looking little boy! Any input would be welcomed! How exciting! Yes, you should definitely take the photo and info to an IA doc. However the difference between our medical system and theirs can be huge especially when you are tlaking about diagnosing something. They may be giving him a shot of something every day, but it may not be needed, or it might not be the proper drug for what (they say) he has. Or it could be vitamins. For exmaple with our first son, the Russians were giving him a specific medicine for a certain diagnosis. Once we got him home, not only did he not have what they said he had, the medicine they were giving him was not the kind he should have been getting if he really did have what they said he did. (does that make sense? ) |

Yes, You definitely need more information and a physician consult. It looks like this could be caused by something relatively minor and treatable like an infection (fungal, parasite, or bacteria). A daily shot could be an anti-fungal agent, antibiotic, or an anti-inflammatory like cortisone... OR, this could be a more serious problem. Here is a link to an educational site for physicians. It is very technical, but may help you define the types of questions to ask.

Well, I am a doctor and besides diabetes, I have no idea either. Nothing comes to mind off the top of my head. I would also say to take your info to an IA doc as they may know what sort of things are being done in Russia.
