Peter's first trip to the ER! My husband and I have been betting from day 1 how long until my ds ended up in the ER; he is so active and a climber. I figured it would be about 6 months and I was close.
Yesterday, 10 minutes before 60 people descended on my in-laws house for a pig-picking (a bbq for you non-Southeners), Peter fell and hit his head on the corner of a wooden stair. A huge gash and blood gushing every where and my poor boy was just screaming. It was awful. I scooped him up and held him close as my MIL held a cold compress on his forehead. (Of course my DH was at the store picking up a few last minute things.)The wound gushed for about 15 minutes and he screamed the whole time! (It felt like it was forever.)Finally, we got the bleeding slowed down and were able to get him in his car seat and take him to the ER. He ended up with 5 stiches right in between his eyebrows. I held up pretty well, but I had to work hard to hold back my tears. The last thing I wanted him to see (or my dd to see) was my tears. What a day! Liz

Geeze louise, Liz... glad to hear you and Peter held up okay! I hope Peter heals quickly. The good thing is that it had to have been an attachment bonding moment for you to rush and take care of him and stay with him through the trauma... this is good.
Mike

Liz,
Boys...that's all I've got to say about it--LOL. Same kind of thing used to happen w/ Max. Sure enough, around that 6 month mark as well...ER w/ stitches. You did better at it than I did though. I wouldn't have been able to fight back the tears. It's awful watching your kids get hurt. Is Peter back to running around the house today? After the ER visit, didn't take long for Max to get back up and go again. How is Natalya handling her brother being stitched up? Hey, there is nothing that a good ol' fashioned ice cream Sundae can't fix. I'm so sorry your son got hurt and do hope he's on the mends today. Wait till he starts climbing trees when he's older. Seriously, if you need anything, give me a call. The girls are missing Natalya. Best wishes Peter on a speedy recovery. You did great Liz! Take care,

I hope Peter is feeling better soon and heals soon. You held up much better then I would. My stomach turns at the sight of blood. I can't even handle a loose tooth. I am just waiting for Adam's first visit to the ER. I know it will be coming soon.
With Josh we lucked out until he was 5. That was for a broken arm that happen on my huband's watch, but I get blamed for it since I was late coming home from Christmas shoping. I would say he wouldn't of been jumping on his bed if was was home. I am still waiting for the first ER visit for stiches. |

We had this experience as well. DS fell on a ball point pen at Daycare and punctured his cheek! Why you say???? because all two year olds should sit on top of a table holding a pen. That way if they fall from said table, you can visit the ER and mark that trip off the list. It was awful! The hospital staff was awful. I was keeping it together until we left then totally lost it. Active boys=ER..... EEEK! Hope he is feeling better. We are using kids Mederma and it is helping the scar.

My son fell and hit his head also a while back. I couldn't believe how much blood came from such a small wound. I was freaking out...I mean it was 1st thing in the morning...I hadn't even had a cup of coffee yet. I almost took my son to the ER in my pajamas! My DH cleaned him up a bit while I threw on some clothes. By the time we got to the ER, DS just wanted to play! Thankfully for us, the ER staff was wonderful. There is also this neat thing called dermabond. They just glued up his wound. It hardly even left a scar. Momma.....she has a little scar on her heart! I think I followed behind every little step he took for the next six months!

Common experience
We had the same experience but during "tubby time". Austin slipped and fell right on the water spout slicing his eyebrow open. The bonus was he was just starting to talk and learned the "S" word quickly that night....even quoted it to the ER staff repeatedly! We are beating it will not be his last trip to the ER.

Hope Peter is doing better now. I have not had to go through this yet. I am not looking forward to it...

Ditto Ditto here!
Thanks guys for the imput. I just thought our Max was a active guy. On Mother's Day Max tripped and fell into the corner bead of the the door frame. Not a lot of Blood but we do have a little scar. Our SIL who is a nurse said they would have not stitched it up. But there is scar so we wished we had gone anyway. We just feel awful Our baby is scared on the forehead!!! We will try that Mederma!
Then last weekend he was being silly and slipped, chipped a clean edge on his front teeth. I am learning that boys are like this but it just breaks our heart, when he has these accidents. I just told DH we will have to cash out our retirement fund for plastic surgery for a graduation present. ![]() If I only had a dollar for every time I say "You have to Be Careful" |

Hope Peter feels better soon!
Event though I have a little girl she is just as active (if not moreso) as any boy I've met. She to wound up in the ER at about 6months after running into a wall at daycare. Yes no fall, just plain ran smack into the wall without stopping and everyone thought her nose was broken. (if you knew dd this would not suprise you) The only good thing was that at the time she was in a daycare at a children's hospital so she got the royal treatment and by the time I got there she was recovered enough to be running around so much that she did it again! Which actually before the second time her nose looked crooked and after not anymore so my hunch is that if it was out of line she fixed it herself.

I'm sorry you all had to go through this.
We've been home 19 months now and have yet to go through this. I still haven't figured out how. We have to be really careful now because Hunter learned how to climb the ladder to his sister's bunkbed. URK!!! ![]()

We had to take Carolyn to the ER a couple of weeks ago. All I have to say is thank god for the dermabond!!!!! We have to hold Carolyn down just to get a flu shot, I'm not sure either one of us would have survived stitches. I hope your little boy is doing fine now

Oh-I think you just brought back all of our memories from our first trips to the ER with our little one's! My son fell and hit the metal facing on the daycare door when he was 8 mo. old. We were in the ER getting the dermabond glue...it took DH, me and 4 other nurses to hold my baby down for the glue!. I was in tears! It was bad - but later it healed wonderfully and he doesn't even have a scar. He cut his eyebrow.
I KNOW this will not be our last trip. I am sorry you had to experience yours so soon! Best wishes!

OMG...we have been home 2 years this month and just this past Monday we were at a family BBQ and DS fell off the chair he was sitting on trying to retrieve a toy he had dropped (kind of slid out of the chair to the side of it but in very slow motion it seemed
). He hit the back of his head on the brick patio and we had our first (in 2 years) gusher!!! I of course was more in shock seeing my son's blood, in that amount, pouring down my hand and DH hand as we tried to comfort him. My knees buckled and I went down to the floor (dizzy, sick to my stomach and unable to stand) and DH and MIL took over until I could compose myself enough to go back and at least hold him. It was awful and he was crying and I was crying, bleeding finally stopped after about 15 minutes. We have several nurses and a couple of doctors in the family so they all made sure he was alright and did not need stitches. Boy am I glad that the "first" wound is over with!!! I feel your pain and glad everything is ok now.

It took Kaitlin a year and a half, much longer than I thought it would, to have stitches. She fell at daycare and split her chin on, of all things, a Lego table. Took 7 stitches to close it up. Luckily it was in the middle of a weekday at school, so we were able to take her to her pediatrician. No ER. Not yet, anyway (knocks on wood).
