Jax has surgery tomorrow - I'm worried!

I know this is small-fry compared to what other kids in the world go through, but my little baby is having surgery tomorrow for a circumcision and urethral calibration......and I'm scared! I'm worried that everything will go wrong and I'm so sad for him. I know he's going to have pain when he wakes up and he won't understand. I wish I could go in for him! I know this isn't a big deal but I can't help it - he's my whole life and I hate that he has to suffer, even when it's necessary to be healthy (he has a large, red lesion under his foreskin that's getting bigger and his ped. urologist says he must be circumcised so we can further evaluate what the cause is....hopefully, it's just a bacterial funk and it will go away once he's circ'd....she may have to biopsy it tomorrow if it looks worse).

If you have any spare-prayer, I'd sure appreciate one sent Jax's way. Also, if anyone has been thru this lately and can give me any advice on post-op stuff, I'd be grateful. I can't imagine it's going to feel real good having a diaper on after all of this....poor little guy!

God bless,

Shawn

Think positive, it is going to make your son healthier! I know that is easier said than done!!! My sister, who is a nurse just had her son circumsized last week. She was so upset and hated the thought of her child possibly being in any pain. She cried in the waiting room but before she knew it , it was over. Very quick! I was there to visit the next day and the baby was fine. Slept comfortably and was happy and calm all day. I will say a prayer for your little one.

Think positive!! Our little one had his at 3 years old.

Yes, he was in pain but the Dr gave us some liquid codiene to give him and he only needed that for 1 day.

Just remember to keep the stitches coated with an anti-biotic ointment and remember the stitches will ooze for a week or so - remember to use a diaper with alot of vaseline - or a telfa pad with alot of vaseline on it so the diaper or underware will not stick to the incisions.

Remember, you are doing this for his good - and he won't remember the surgery after one week!!!!

circ

my grandma gave me the best advise: buy some 4 x 4 gauzes. melt a container of vasoline in a pan of hot water. pour it over the stack of gauzes, so they are fully coated/saturated. Then at changing time you dont have to mess with smearing gloppy vasoline and getting it everywhere except where you want it. simply pull the next gauze off the stack, make a 'tee-pee' shape cone, and place it over the ....er, sore place/surgery site!
You can also do this with some anti-biotic lotion, I think, just don't get it too hot when you melt it.

He'll be fine, he won't remember it.
and you'll be fine. I cried and cried at my second son's (bad pediatrician, more pain than necessary, wouldn't listen to me, etc. etc.) but little guy healed right up and has never held it against me!

Think healing, healthy thoughts of love!
Danielle

Pedi nurse chiming in... Danielle and the others have given you the absolute best advice. Keep that "vaseline gauze" on the site until you see the skin start to toughen up. It is normal for the site to get a whitish/yellow coating on it a day or so afterward... can look a little scary/infected, but normal. Make sure you get a prescription for 24 hours worth of Tylenol w/ codeine, after that regular Tylenol should be okay if he seems uncomfortable.

Danielle - I LOVE that idea from your Grandma!! In the hospital we have vaseline gauze that is prepacked. I would never have thought to do what she suggested. Outstanding!!

Kim

Hi! I understand. When our son was cir'd (5 days old), the nurse asked us if we wanted her to give him Tylenol before the procedure (we did). After that, they gave us some to bring home. I think I only gave him one dose.

They say the baby is more upset at being strapped down on the bed/board than pain, because they use a local anasthetic or penile block to prevent pain.

Afterward, we were just told to put vaseline on at every diaper change over the gauze that covered him until it fell off. We had no problems at all.

Wishing the same for your precious little guy........

Alex had another condition which required a little more probing when he had his circ. done. He was 14 months old and was extremely uncomfortable for a couple of days after. He got the tylenol/cod. prescription for a few days.

I felt awful for him...but after those first few days he was much better...but I was just sick about it when he was in pain.

Prayers and hugs coming your way!!! Update us when you can.
