Need advice for a puking 2 year old....

Ok, I know I have 4 kids now and I should be good at this stuff, but I have always hated vomiting and my children have only done it a couple times in their lives. So now my 2 year old woke up sick. She doesn't understand the concept of throwing up in the toilet so her crib, my carpet, my bed, and me are covered in it now. Do I just walk around with a bucket or lay her on towels all day (even though she rarely stays still)? I know the kind of diet I need to push but I need help with the logistics of handling the throwing up. I went to bed feeling overwhelmed at my current life and then I woke up at 5:30 to an even worse day. Isn't that always the case?? And big sister thinks it's time to get up so she's up and running around way before she normally does. I just didn't need this today. But I know Lilia doesn't need it either. I'm just praying for the compassionate heart I need today.

in my experience, you just stay in survival mode and keep surrounding them with bath towles and beach towels and anything big and absorbant.

you are right, she is too little to "get it".

i'm sorry she is so sick. i always think with kids that small it must be pretty scary to have stuff coming up your throat and shooting out in front of you.

hang in there.

yup just like the concept of "blow your nose" they just don't get it yet.

do you have a playpen you can corral her with for a bit? you may need to talk to your older child who may understand a bit more that it needs to be a bit of quiet time today for everyone a hand..

good luck

I agree, keep as many towels surrounding her or in her vicinty as possible. Get a laundry basket to put the used towels in. Then do laundry as needed. Gross I know, but when you've got a throwing up child you do what you do to get by. If she will stay in bed, or on the couch, put on the tv to help her stay put and cover your bed/couch with towels. Good Luck, it's miserable I know!!

Oh Nancy I can totally relate! Bringing back memories of a few months back. I second what votemom said. Definitely stay in survival mode. That's all you can do. Mess is NOT going to matter b/c no one is coming in that house anyways when someone is sick. The youngest I've had that got the concept of the bucket was 3yo Alex. Never dealt w/ a 2 yo so I don't really know what to say. She definitely won't get the toilet idea. I say definitely put her in one place w/ towels, etc. Bucket close by. Her favorite show to get her mind off of it. Do you have any phenergan handy? That always stops my kids from vomitting further. It's for nausea. It is prescription but since our doc knows us and knows that if one gets sick there may be more, he wrote us a spare script. The hard part w/ a couple of kids like you and I have is trying to keep the others away while you tend to the one that is sick.

You will make it through this one as well. So sorry this is how your day is going. I've btdt and it is NO fun. Takes days to recover. I will keep you in my thoughts for awhile. Hugs from cyberspace. I do hope the little one is better soon. Can your husband come home early and possilby take over for a little while? Anything you can do to try to relieve the load will help. I have found many friends are understanding and will sometimes volunteer to take the kids for a day.

Good luck and good health to you and your family.

it DOES take days to recover - that's the crazy part! your child rebounds quickly and goes back into full throttle and you have mountains of laundry to deal with, not to mention a trashed house that you haven't been able to maintain because you've been with them 24/7.

oh well. just know you are in good company and it's all part of motherhood!

My brother-in-law's family started my family on this: Give them an old towel or three to throw up in. I know it sounds gross but it worked for my sister's kids even when they were small. He would then rinse the towel in the shower then throw it in the washer. The kids would keep the "throw up towel" with them when they were not feeling well.

Go to Walmart and pick up a 3 quart kool aid drink container. The one that is sort of oval shaped and has the handle all the way down the side. Toss out the lid, because it will never be used for drinks.

I use these containers for my boys (2.5 & 4.5). My youngest was sick just before July 4th, when I had a 12 hour car ride to visit friends. The handle makes it easier for the kids to carry and the oval shape fits their face perfectly.

Vomiting isn't good for anyone. Especially the person doing the vomiting. Ask your doctor for medication for the vomiting. There is new medication for vomiting that you rub on the child's wrist. Children can dehydrate so fast and your Physician can answer all of your questions. Hope this helps.

There's a product called Mothers Little Miracle that will get the odor of vomit out of things like your carpet or mattress.

You guys are full of great ideas! Thank you! Luckily Lilia only threw up about 6x over the course of a few hours and then it was over. But I feel more prepared for the next time (hope there isn't a next time anytime soon though).

Growing up in Colorado, we could buy a small, brown bottle with a while label of Coca Cola syrup. It's a vey old-fashioned looking bottle. One spoonful always knocked out the nausea.

Strangely enough, couldn't find it in the Atlanta-area--home of Coca Cola.

My friend turned me onto an over the counter syrup called Emetrol (for nausea). We bought it at the supermarket, in the supplement section. I tried it myself for my upset stomach. I had just gotten over a stomach virus and was feely a bit queesy since my DS was still throwing up and it worked almost instantly. It is a short term fix, but worked long enough to allow me to fall asleep. My friend says it also works for the bloated feeling you get if you eat too much.

My mom also gave us the "coke" syrup growing up. These days, I just open a can of coke/diet coke and let it warm up and go flat. Doesn't work quite as well, but it helps.
