Can't take the heat
This is Ana's first summer in America. Although she LOVES America she's not so fond of the heat. It's becoming a struggle to get her to even go outside and get in the car. Especially today. It's 95 with 105 heat index.
Anyone else run into this? |

Yes, six-year-old Julia doesn't react well to the heat in San Antonio either, which is a little more toasty than St. Petersburg. I constantly push fluids at her.

Mine too - they both complain about how hot it is and we haven't hit the really hot part of summer yet. I always say "Oh, yes - it is hot - have fun playing"...so I think they figured out it doesn't get them back inside!

Hey, I can relate b/c I don't live that far from you!! Irina was the exact same way when we brought her home. She would just about die when we had to go outside and especially in the car. I used to let them carry water bottles everywhere. Helped a little. Just takes time for them to get used to it. In winter here, our kids NEVER wear a winter coat. Irina laughed when she had her first winter here. It was a record snow storm for the state of NC and we got 24". I was so excited that I woke up the kids and said look at the snow. Irina said where? I said all over. She said "that?" That's not much snow! Where she was from it would get 5 to 6' of snow we were told by the caretakers. That's why they had doors on the second floor of the orphanages.--- They couldn't get out of the bottom one b/c it would be snowed in. So for her, not much snow. But the heat the first year, drove her just about insane and me with it.
Hey, have your girls come over and swim! Pool's open and water is refreshing. In a few more weeks we'll have to start cooling it off w/ hose water and ice cubes. That's when you know it's hot folks. Your daughter will get through this summer but it will take alot out of her from what I experienced w/ Irina. Don't be suprised if she sweats ALOT. They're just not used to the southern heat and humidity yet. Good luck. Maybe buy her one of those dollar store mist fans to carry w/ her. Best wishes,

I'm actually a little worried because we will be bringing our son home at the end of July and where I live it hovers in the mid - high 90's through summer. We have no airconditioning. I hope he copes OK.

HotLanta
I live in Hot-Lanta GA and last summer my daughter [from the edge of Siberia] whined constantly. Just about drove me nuts. I told her we were having a mild summer and she looked at me with horror. LOL.
This summer is more typical - highs 90-100 already and we're in a drought. I try to get her to drink water but she hates to do it. I am letting her walk down the street to the neighborhood pool by herself [with a walkie talkie in hand] and she enjoys cooling off in at the pool in the late afternoons. I told her a few weeks ago when it started getting hot that I simply wouldn't tolerate any more complaining about the heat. She had gotten on my last nerve - and it was only in the mid 80's! I said "This Atlanta. It will be boiling hot all summer. I DON'T want to her all the whining! Just hush up or I'll punish you for a bad attitude!" I don't tolerate a bad attitude or disrepect. She is quiet now. LOL. We just spent $1600 for a new air conditioner. It is a necessity here. I urge you to at least buy a window unit. Heat stroke is nothing to mess with. Dee

I've been in FL almost my life where the heat index stays in the 90's and 100's and I still have problems with the hot humid summers. My boys have only lived in this climate, so I can only imagine the little ones who aren't accustomed. Truthfully, in June, July, August, if we aren't in the water some way some how (sprinklers, waterslides, beach, pool, etc), we mostly skip playing outside.
Today we were going to the free movie and then a play date to burn some energy and I thought I was going to suffocate walking to the car!!

Antonina is struggling. I'm glad today is the last day of school so she can relax as the heat is taking it out of her. She's going to summer school for part of the summer but mornings only- she can relax in the afternoons. I was trying to explain to her the other day that it really wasn't sooo hot just yet ........

My girls are not complaining BUT are having a real hard time with the heat this week. The poor things get all red (not sunburn) and their hair gets drenched in sweat within 20 minutes. They just don't seem to understand the concept of shade either- I try to tell them to take a break or play in the shade and they continue to play in the sunniest parts of the yard!! LOL
I've been only letting them out in the early am and after 4pm lately because they look too hot and I am afraid the sunblock will wear off and they will burn! (They are so fair skinned) On the good side, all this sun, swimming, etc. makes them sleep soooo good at night. |
