Born 100 years apart...linked by a yellow piece of yarn...

As I was putting Arianna to bed this weekend...I looked at this simple, hand crocheted blanket and had a 'wow moment.' As I tucked in my sweet little angel I remembered that this blanket was made with love for me so many years ago...when I wasn't too much older than her. I picked out this yarn at my Great-Grandmother's request and she made me this...early one spring... It has somehow managed to follow me through the years...through all the ups and downs...tears and smiles.

My 'Grandma Dresses' as I called her, emigrated to the US as a child of about 11....from what was once called Czechoslovakia....a neighbor of Russia. She left behind friends and family scattered throughout both Czechoslovakia and Russia. On the long boat ride over she was taught to crochet on her fingers...to help pass the time. She settled in and eventually became a citizen but honored her heritage...she married and had her 9 children...my maternal grandmother being one of them... I have so many happy memories of the 11 wonderful years I got to spend learning from this wonderful and strong woman...who even had the patience to teach me to crochet when I was just 6 or 7 years old...

And now so many years later...the blanket that was made by a woman who came here to find a new life and freedom is covering a child who was born not too far away from where she was born...100 years later. A little girl who is teaching us so much about living and happiness...joined together by a yellow piece of yarn to a woman who taught me so much about living and happiness.

The Circle of Life is so amazing sometimes...

(My apologies to those who read this elsewhere...)

Okay, that is simply a beautiful story. Once again I am moved to tears today reading posts. I'm feeling extremely sentimental today. Thanks for sharing Karen.

What a beautiful story! I remember feeling the same connection as I walked the streets of Vladivostok to bring home a child - the same streets my grandparents walked in the early 1900's!!! When they left, they were saddened beyond words - knowing they would never be allowed to return...And now I walked those same streets with my new daughter who was born there also...

Imagine what your grandmother would think (what she may in fact be thinking) as you cover your child with this blanket. It truly is a "circle of life"!!!

This is wonderful. THe photo caught my eye - at my baby shower (babe was just 3 weeks old), I opened a gift that read "handmade by Nanny". She was my husband's grandmother who passed away a few years ago. Well, her daughter and granddaughter had saved the last baby blanket she'd crocheted to hand down in the family - and it came to us!

Needless to say, several of us were "bawling like babies" at the shower after I opened that!!!

What a beautiful story! Thanks for sharing it the blanket is beautiful, too. I have a blanket that I have never used that my aunt crocheted as my wedding gift. I must get it out and let Emily use it.

Making memories...

What a great story. Your grandmother would be so glad to know that her blanket was still being used.

My grandfather taught me how to crochet, too. I've got afghans that he lovingly made ready and waiting for some more use.

I also sorted through all my favourite clothes from growing up. There are Easter dresses and halloween costumes and my junior high outfit that let me feel cool. I'm going to take patches from all these clothes and make a quilt for my daughter. Then, as she grows up, I'm going to save bits of her favourites to make a quilt for her.

A friend's daughter sent me a cozy blanket for my birthday. She said it was the closest she could get to hugging me from across the ocean. Here's to all the hugs that get tucked around your little girl each night.

Kate
