Food question - older kids
Ok, what did y'all have the first few days you were home? I was told my age 5 daughter has soup every day at the orphanage with noodles and potatoes. Got that covered. Any tips for my last minute gocery shopping?

There's a good food thread going on FRUA right now, Nancy, with lots of people posting their experiences.
My best advice is not to stock up too much on anything because it's really unpredictable what kids will eat once they get home. Ours didn't want to have anything to do with food that reminded them of the orphanage. We had to start with very simple, plain food, though. Others (people I very much envy) have had kids that will eat pretty much anything they're served.

Fruit, Fruit and more Fruit. Potatoes - mashed, baked or boiled. Pasta - with butter and salt, occassionally she would eat it with sauce. Chicken legs Meat If you have a Russian food store, stock up on some Pelmini and Pierogies - great to keep in the freezer for the quick boil and serve meal when all esle fails. In the early days she would eat a baked potato with chopped meat in spaghetti sauce. She rarely ate anything that didn't not look like its originally pre-cooked from. So if you are doing something elaborate -like a casserole or lasagna- show her the pieces that go in first

My boys really ate anything -- We hads lots of mashed potatoes, tried some cooked cabbage, but they didn't want it (wanted cole slaw instead). We had cheerios for breakfast (didn't want oatmeal). My mom made meals for us when we got home; had tuna noodle casserole, rice and cream of chicken, rice and chicken casseroles, cream chipped beef, meatloaf .. things like that. I was lucky, my boys weren't picky and the food didn't affec their little tummies. Big hits were also yogurt, crackers, jello, and mac and cheese.
What I noticed most w/ my 5 yr. old is he couldn't seem to get ENOUGH food. He'd eat and eat .. and try to eat quickly. It was hard to get him to slow down. Same w/ drinking. I'd put his cup out of reach so he had to ask for it each time ....slowed him down. Both of them still eat almost anything put in front of them ... They have such appetites .. I have NO IDEA what I'll do when they teenagers! I was one of the lucky ones with the food ... my boys ate anything but veggies! ![]()

Our kids ate anything we gave them. Still do...very good eaters. They are uninterested in anything that reminds them of Russia - they won't eat Cheerios because it tastes "bland, like kasha" - their words!

Our boys eat anything also... but when we first came home they couldnt get enough fruit (bananas, apples "yapples they called them!" and peaches). they also dearly love pasta more with butter or white sauce than red sauce.
They love carrots, canteloupe, broccoli, cabbage... all kinds of things i wouldnt touch at their age! good luck! ps even to this day they will often ask for fruit over chips and candy which totally blows me and Lee away...as my DH says "if a preschool kid asks for fruit, give it to him, no matter what time of day or night it is!" alli |
