What happens to everyone's kids in the sun? Tan or Burn or???

I got to thinking about this when we were away this week...

Both of my kids are very fair skinned...Alex moreso...but Arianna very rarely burns. I put sunscreen on her when we got to the beach or are going to be in the pool for a while...but daily she is in the sun and just tans. I forgot to put sunscreen on her on Tuesday and we were outside for hours...(I know bad mommy ) and she never even turned a little pink and it was 90+ degrees out!

And then there is my baby lobster...he is either pale white or lobster red, with sunscreen. We have never seen him tan...although I did notice a few freckles on him.

Arianna also has a few more freckles...but not a lot.

So, what happens when your little guys and gals are in the sun?

My Alex is fair skinned, but yet he tans. I am confused by it...LOL. He gets darker than me and dh. I do put lots of sunblock on him, but he doesn't burn at all.

Luke has an olive tone to his skin and he tans beautifully even with suncreen.

Ella definitely has fairer skin. It's too early to tell, not enough sun in MO yet!

Tans

We were worried about the Oklahoma sun when we brought Jaxon home, since he was from close to Siberia. He has dark hair and eyes, but seemed fair skin when we came home. But, once he started to play outside he immediately started getting very tan! He tans better than me, and I am part Cherokee Indian!

I use a ton of sun screen - and my daughter gets a beautiful tan. It lasts forever too. It is finally totally fading from last summer.

She looks gorgeous and her burn and peel mother looks like a neon sign. I started using the Jergins Tanning lotion - I love it! Won't prevent my burn, but it will help me look a little better.

My biracial nieces tan even w/ heavy sunblock. I don't think they've ever burned.

Their dad, who is EXTREMELY dark skinned says he burns - we can't see it, of course, be he says he can feel it!

We used 50spf on Connor while we were in Florida this month. This will be his first summer home with us, so I dont know how his skin will react. He is very fair-skinned though, so I plan on keeping him saturated in suntan lotion.

Side note: I've noticed a few posters that have said their children have been diagnosed with exzema. Well, Connor started developing a rash on his face in February and the dermatologist diagnosed exzema. Nothing has worked clearing it up, including prescribed medications, and it got so much worse in Florida. (I didnt use the suntan lotion on his face....I bought him a big floppy hat instead). Once we got home, I started using the over the counter dry skin lotion recommended by the dermatolgist, and it has cleared up....finally!

DD gets alittle pink and then tans beautifully! She is fair skinned, but not as fair as I am.... I have always been burn & peel!!! It took way tooooo long for me to get a tan when I was younger when I had the time (and grew up on the beach). Now, I use a self tanner lotion to tone down the BRIGHT WHITE!!!

Rebecca burns easily (as do both her parents). We use clear zinc oxide a lot (it is basically Desitin) because Rebecca seems to get a rash from regular sunscreen and I hate the smell of it. She fell and needed stiches on her chin a year ago and this is what her plastic surgeon recommended we use.

While it is true that fair skin damages easier than darker skin just because fair skin appears to tan rather than burn does not mean that it is getting any less damaged.

Sun

My son has blonde hair blue eyes. His skin although light gets a mild tan.

Me on the otherhand have never had a tan. I have brown hair, freckle and burn.

Son used to react more to the sun: his first year home, he got sun poisoning on his cheeks in April. So, he was zinc oxide and floppy hat over his spf 50 baby block the rest of that summer.

Since that summer, we haven't seen any burns at all. We sunscreen everyday...and both of them build up a beautiful tan. Not a single freckle.

Me? I have two colors: lobster red, and bright white.

My little one was so light when we came home last summer, but after just trips to the car, etc in the sun she was tan. I use spf 50 on her and she tans so dark. She is 1/2 Eskimo though, so she has one up on us in the tan department.

My daughter burns...she is quite fair and even burns on the part in her hair and I have to remember to put sunscreen there too. Two years ago when we were in Aruba, she burned really badly on her back even though she was wearing sunscreen. I have to be careful to keep her in the shade off and on or have her wear a hat.

Both my kids are very fair but tan. I watch them with sunscreen but they very rarely burn.

Funny - I'm the same way which is rare for a blonde.

N tans beautifully -- though she hates it. Something she never saw in Siberia. She thinks its ugly, but she looks great.

Her hair also turns that beautiful beach bum blonde.
