Hotels you can walk to the red square
Hey,
I've gone back to some of the old hotel threads, but I am looking for a little more info. Which hotels did you stay in that you have good reviews of and that are in walking distance to the red square (within two miles maybe) oh and that have at least some English speaking staff. With all the movement I'm seeing on the boards , I'm starting to feel hopeful our trip 1 dates are coming soon .

We stayed at the Marriott Royal (Aroura) and it is a 5 minute walk to Red Square. Everyone we encountered spoke English. It is a wonderful hotel, a 5 star hotel, although it tends to be more of a business hotel than an adoption hotel. They do have an adoption rate...but it is the most expensive Marriott in Moscow. We used reward points...they cater to you 24/7...we loved it!

We really enjoyed the Marriott Tverskaya. It takes about 30 minutes to walk to Red Square from there (not sure how many miles that is), but it was an okay walk...and it's straight down Tverskaya street. You can't miss it.
Everyone at the Tverskaya spoke English. They have a "lobby" on the 4th floor where lots of adoptive families had gathered and there's a computer with free internet access there. ![]() The Marriott Grand is also on Tverskaya Street, but closer to Red Square (maybe 15 minutes walk). We stayed there for one night on our second trip. It's a very nice hotel but a little fancy for my tastes. And a little more expensive than the Tverskaya. The Sheraton is directly across the street from the Tverskaya, so it would be the same distance from Red Square. I haven't stayed there myself, but I have friends who did and said it was wonderful. Lots of English speaking staff. (We also stayed at the Marriott Renaissance, which is *not* within walking distance of Red Square...but they do have a free shuttle that goes there several times per day.)

We stayed at the Marriott Grand and it was a very nice walk to Red Square. You can also catch the Metro a few doors down and take that if you don't really want to walk. (We did that for old Arbat)

We stayed at Marriott Grand and also splurged on trip #1 at the Kempinski. Marriott is a short walk. Kempinski is right across the river.

Rossiya Hotel
On trip one we stayed in the Rossiya Hotel. I think that is the spelling. It is a Russian Hotel located across from the Kremlin. It is NOT an American style hotel, however for trip one with no kids it was fine, no frills. You have to get an uppdated room with a Kremlin view if you go, I have heard the unupdated rooms are not good.
The view of St. Basils Cathedral and the Kremlin at night were stunning. Red Square is a block away, along with the shopping mall that borders it. People at the desk speak anough English to get by. I think we registered on-line, but it was 20 months ago and it was $125/night then. Regards, Sprout |

Ukraina
The Ukraina is within easy walking distance to Red Square, and the rooms are not expensive. The staff speaks some English. I recommend them highly.

Stayed at the Courtyard Marriott on trip #1 and the location was very close (10 minute walk to Red Square) and I cannot say enough good things about the staff. Stayed at the Tverskaya on trip #2 - not as friendly staff but great for the kids - second floor play area.

The Marriott Tverskaya is a long but safe walk from Red Square. Great window shopping along the way.
A few words of caution: One: you don’t realize it on the way there, but it is down hill all the way to Red Square, which means up hill on the way back. Two: while it is true that Red Square is at the end of Tverskaya, the underground walkways that go from Tverskaya up into Red Square are a little tricky, especially if you don’t know your Cyrillic alphabet. On the way back, we kept going down and coming back up somewhere other than we wanted to be. There is a whole catacomb down there of shops, kiosks, and doors to subways, malls, and staircases. Three: since you go up and down stairs a lot to cross a number of streets on the way, make sure if you are bringing a stroller you have an extra pair of hands to carry one end. Oh, and another note, we were the only people we ever saw on Tverskaya with strollers. I think people taking their children for walks choose quieter streets.
