"I'm adopted"

Our 9 year old daughter (home just under 6 months now) had a dentist appointment today and once again she just blew my mind! The hygeinist was getting her ready and was having trouble understanding our daughter's accent. I told the hygeinist that she is from Russia and she said "Oh so you are not her mother?" I replied " Yes I am her mother." Well the dummy just looked totally baffled and then our daughter announced (with a big smile) "I'm adopted!"

We have rarely used the word adoption around our daughter, not because we are hiding anything, but because it is a complicated word in English so we just use other words to decribe how we became a family. We say things like "when you came home" and "when we became a family" or "when we saw the judge in Russia so we could become your parents." She has seen some things on TV about adoption, such as the Disney show Sister, Sister and a movie she watched the other night where an adopted boy found out his birth mother was a mermaid. Still, before today I had never heard her say the word "adopted", and the best part was the big smile on her face when she said it. I gave her such a big hug and told her how proud I was of her.

Don't underestimate these kids' abilities to put two and three together and come out with a surpizing (and correct) answer...some of them are extremely intuitive. In fact, this was something that Kretzklan and I were talking about last night relative to her two (very, very cute) kiddos recent from Russia. (I hooked up with them for dinner last night as I have been on a business "excursion" in their area this week) Her kids pull some really interesting things out of thin air and I've noticed the same with ours, although usually with the younger.

That all said, your daughter's response was wonderful!

Our Kids are wonderful!!! They know exactly when to say something along those lines, and surprising us!!!

DD (also 9 y/o) has on occassion come out with somethings too.... She has told people (when they make stupid ignorant comments) on how we have the same eyes, nose, mouth, chin and hair. "This is my Mommy, and I am her daughter forever!!" That usually shuts them right up!!!

Kudos to your DD!!! Bravo!!!

Thanks for sharing this. I needed a smile this morning, and the image of your daughter piping in with a huge smile did the trick! It sounds like she is adjusting nicely to her new family.

What a smart little girl! It also sounds like you guys are doing a wonderful job with getting her adjusted since she has such a positive attitude about her adoption.

My little Charlie (20 mos old now) is very quick too. He watches me do something, and can usually copy it after one try. Such a smartypants!

I think kids are very quick because they not only listen to what we say, they watch what we do. You must be giving her a very good example.
